I was wondering why after Somalia when several Rangers manning the .50 cal MG were killed by militia fire. That a cupola (or at least a gun shield) similiar to one on the old M113 ACAV weren't put in to help reduce area of exposure of the gunner. For an HMMWV that is. I remember in Vietnam War, the Gun shield was added after heavy losses by ARVN and US forces. Would it interfere with clearance when air transported?

The Army and USMC refuse to use gun shields on anything.

Everyone knows they work, but Uncle Sam has been disinterested for a long time.
