I am a member are Air Force ROTC at my university and I am supposed to find out the answer to this question:

"How many moving parts are there in the cannon of an A-10 Warthog?"

If anyone knows this answer, it would be VERY appreciated!!
Thank you!

Have you already exhausted the various sources available on-line?

Try http://www.airwar.ru/weapon/guns/gau8a.html.

Yeah... Kind of snarky of me. Sorry Hammer22. But what if I just said "47, not counting the trigger finger"?

<soapbox>
However, you are studying to be an officer, a <b>leader</b> in the honorable profession of arms, and a member of the most powerful and awesome military organization in the history of humanity. It should not hurt you to "learn how to learn".
</soapbox>

This reminds me of a story I read some years ago.

At a USMC Officer Candidate school (Platoon leader school?), an instructor informs the class that they will now have an essay test.

The question:
You are given a 32 foot flag pole, 2 shovels and 1 pick. You have 4 men. You must erect the flag pole in 3 hours or less.

What do you do?

All of the non-prior service students write like mad. Some for 20 pages or more. A student who is an enlisted man who has earned his BA and has been selected for commissioning. He writes for less than a minute.

The next day the instructor begins the class with a sigh. "I read all of your essays. All but one are unacceptable. Those of you that attemted to use "team building skills" or to "obtain buy in" missed the point. Let me read you the one perfect answer:

"Sargeant, put up that flag pole. Tell me when you're done."

Of course my JROTC Colonel, Ivy McCoy, always told me if I had a question on an aircraft find a crew chief.

1. Don't look conspicuous; it draws fire.
2. Never draw fire; it irritates everyone around you.

So can we assume that Blade09 and Hammer22 are in the same ROTC detachment? Or is there some kind of competition going on, who can find the answer first?

I just find it very curious that two new people came and asked the exact same question within days of each other... (if there were a one-eyebrow-cocked smiley, I would put it here)

"See that green switch? Flip it down."

Your question needs to be clarified. The gun itself or the gun along with the ammo drum and track feed system? There are two hydraulic motors that provide power to turn the seven-barreled gun. The rounds are percussion primed which means there is mechanical firing pin that strike each round as it moved into firing position.
Having said this though, I can not answer your question but maybe this info will help.

The figure would stager you. Have to count all the ball bearing in the drum and all bearing peroid. All elements and handling components. Do you count the chute flex from firing as movement. Easily above 3000 pieces. How many pieces does grease count as. Figure the hydrive housing, drum housing, partitions. endcovers, fixed chutes and unit housings are about the only stationary parts. Gun housing sort of moves on the recoil assemblies.

Without weapons its just another airliner
