Wow, a real A-10 pilot!

I'm just your average Joe Blow. It just so happens that I am extremely lucky to have made it to my dream job...I used to fly regional airliners. I took a 50% pay cut to go on active duty and do this, and the job satisfaction and quality of life have made it totally worth while.

I can only pretend to do what you guys do. What do you enjoy most about your job?

There are so many great things about this job that it's hard to narrow it down to just one particular point. The best part overall has to be the people. I have met so many talented, motivated, and dedicated people in this job. If you love aviation, the Air Force is the place to be.
It also goes without saying that actually flying the 'Hog is an awesome experience. When I was young, I remember being at the beach with my grandfather and watching A-10s flying out of Myrtle Beach thunder by about 50 feet above the ocean, hugging the coastline. The pilots were so low, they would wave at people on the beach (I'm convinced that they were scouting the babes). It is hard for me to believe that I'm the guy in the cockpit now! There simply is no comparison between hauling passengers around and shooting the GAU-8.

Also, what weapons would you recommend for anti-tank missions, CBU-87s? Also: if you load 4 Mk-84s on the plane, is it extremely detrimental to performance? How much damage can a Mk-84 do? Damn I can't wait to try the A-10 out for myself now

At my experience level, I would employ whatever my flight lead wanted me to! It depends upon the situation, but we would probably start off using Mavericks. Then we would use whatever else our squadron weapons officer decided to load on our jets -- and that is predicated on what is available in theater, and many other variables. For example, in Operation Iraqi Freedom, most jets had two Mavericks, 4 MK-82 low drags, 1150 rounds of 30mm combat mix, plus white phosphorus rockets (for marking targets), the jamming pod, two AIM-9 Sidewinders, and either a SUU-25 flare pod or another pod of high explosive rockets. Sometimes CBU-87 was loaded instead of the MK-82s.
The last time I dropped live MK-82s was about four months ago, and there is a huge difference in performance versus flying around with two TERs and six BDU-33 25 pound practice bombs -- but that is to be expected. Loading 4 MK-82s on the jet isn't as detrimental as 4 canisters of CBU-87. A MK-82 is a 500 pound weapon, whereas one can of CBU-87 weighs in at close to 1,000 pounds. Again, depending on the situation, you might want to drop the free-fall ordnance first so you lighten up the jet.
As far as a MK-84...it's a big boom. Lots of blast and frag. Let's put it this way...you don't want to be anywhere near it when it goes off.
Hope this answers your questions!
