Must have been round 2 or 3 then because the first time it was mentioned was in the late 70's early 80's....as far as I know DS 1 had nothing to do with it. Might be something to check into but I think the killing point was the agreement that the AF and the Army had in 47 when the AF became a seperate entity. The A-10 exceeded the agreement for the Army concerning fixed wing combat type aircraft.

THE 1ST TIME I EVER HEARD ABOUT IT WAS IN LATE 88 ANDIT GOT REAL HOT AND HEAVY IN THE LATE 89 TO 90 TIME FRAME.
WEWENT TO FT. RUCKER AND SOME ARMY PILOTS WE'RE TELLING US THEY'LLBE FLYING THEM SOON AND WE'LL ALL BE IN THE ARMY(<img src=icon_smile_sad.gif border=0 align=middle><img src=icon_smile_sad.gif border=0 align=middle><img src=icon_smile_sad.gif border=0 align=middle>)

IN THE EARLY PART OF 90 IT WAS GETTING DARN RIGHT SCAREY!!! THEY EVEN STARTED BRIEFING US ON WHAT WAS GOING TO HAPPEN AND HOW THE COMMAND STRUCTURE WAS GOING TO WORK FOR USAF PERSONEL.

BUT WHEN WE DEPLOYED IN AUG90 IT ALL WENT AWAY

Thanx for recounting it.

I can assure you it was talked about alot sooner than 88. It was during my first go-round with the A-10 and that was 78-81. The Army fellas I talked with were extremely excited at the prospect of flying the A-10 and asked a huge amount of questions, aircrew and maintenace guys alike. They made it seem like they were going to be getting them new from the factory, that wasnt going to happen in 88.

with the A-10 being a PROVEN performer, do you guys think I would be off-base in guessing that cutting the Hog is more of the "consollidation"(AKA putting all your eggs into one basket)mindset by the AF to lessen logistics,
? which I believe is why we dumped the F-111 and F-4G Weasle in favor of the F-15E and F-16CJ.

Jimbo, do you have any pics of this SBS boat? I was under the impression that the C-17 could carry anything the C-5 could , just not as many.

THE FRED IS ONE OF THOSE PLANES,YOU REALLY NEED NO MATTER THE COST.

LETS FIGURE OUT JUST HOW MUCH A BRAND NEW,FRESH FROM THE FACTORY A-10C WOULD COST!!

I KNOW THE COST OF BULIDING THE NEW JIGS,PLANT ,SUB CONTRACTORS ETC... WOULD BE ALOT ,BUT LOOK AT IN THE TERMS OF,JOBS!!!!! AND REVENUE

I STILL THINK IN THE LONG RUN,IT WOULD BE CHEAPER AND MAKE ALOT'A SENSE

PLUS YOU DONT NEED TO BULID SPECIAL HANGARS,SPACE AGE EQUIPMENT ETC....

ALOT OF THE STUFF IS OFF THE SELF NOW.

THEN MAYBE WE COULD GET SOME 2 SEATERS!!!

Well, if there are lawndart pilots out there who don't mind flying an unarmored, single engined, hotrod for CAS, I guess all one can say is "Ashes to ashes, dust to dust..." Better open up more plots at Arlington. It's like using a corvette to tow your boat or go hunting. Why can't they just make the hog new and improved? Build some new ones with better engines, w/ 650 mph capability maybe? If I'm a pilot someday I sure ain't flyin' no single engined, thin skin rocket into CAS.

A DEER (Lawndart) MAY BE FASTER THAN A HOG...BUT AT LEAST I DON'T HAVE TO EMPTY MY WHOLE MAGAZINE TO DROP A DEER! Enough said.
