Well, since you're describing the F-18 and I presume have flown it, I most certainly won't argue with a "Peter Pan Squid DART" pilot...

I caught the late night re-run of this show, it was pretty cool.

Am i the only one that saw the F-14 pull a Cobra manuever in that show?

I also thought it was interesting that the F-15 and F-14 had a fly off for the Shaw of Iran and the F-14 blew everyone away with it's performance.

Also loved the six on six test.

Neat show, but as always, there were more than a few innacuracies.

Cough Cough, Both were Marine Corps Aircraft, F18C China Lake/Pax River Test Pilot School. F18D VMFA (AW) 332 Exchange.

Marines are the "Pirate" side of the navy, Someone has to keep them homos from buggering each other on ship. Its a rough job, Rape Pilage and Murder, the life of a Pirate on the High Seas.

The last i checked the F14 is a Navy High Speed Low Drag Deep penetrator. Sounds pretty peter pan to me

Bummer i missed that , but i would bear in mind that During those years of Foriegn defense sales, Gruman was the Top Dog in that regards and had a large chunk of political capital. The F14 was a good Choice for the Iranians, They had some powerful neighbors, IRAQ and the Soviet Bear.

The F14 has always been capable of HIGH AOA manuevering, the problem is its Nacelle and Engine Design, IF the F14 Loses Ram Air Pressure they have a very bad habit of stalling the engine , causeing The other HO engine to put the aircraft in an unrecoverable spin induced by high thrust.

2 aircraft I would never want to be in a departure, is an F14 and an F4, the NATOPS of the period for both aircraft state " when in full departure it is highly recommend for the aircrew to egress"

I have experianced departures in the F4G it was not an experiance I ever want to be in again. Lucky we didnt Egress the airframe and give it back to the Taxpayers

I remember making that statement a few months ago, a few of our "experts" here dismissed it as b.s.

F-14 is a tricky airplane to fly, it takes a seasoned avaitor to put the Tomcat through its paces. Dennis Romano was interviewed in that feature, he was one of the flight crew who flew the F-14 in that demonstration for the Shah. He and Don Evans also performed a 9 1/2 g 400 knot 360 degree turn durring that fly off (staying within the field boundary). Its all about the pilots to get the most an airframe has to offer.

Trying to recall Grumman's other export sales...McDonnell Douglas was building F-4's for just about everyone back then, Royal Navy, Royal Air Force, Israel, Iran, West German Luftwaffe to name a few...As well as exporting A-4's. McDonnell Douglas and the USAF felt the F-15 was a shoe-in for Iran, a natural replacement for the F-4. But the Shah was smart enough to realize that the F-4 was an aircraft developed for the Navy, and considered it prudent to take a look at both the USAF and USN follow on programs to augment the F-4 in IIAF service.(F-14/15) Shah liked his weapons, its to bad he got booted out of his country.

That has largely been corrected with the GE powered F-14's. The original TF30 motors sucked for high AoA manuevers, or so the show reported. They had some pilots on there stating that the D model is very hard to get to compressor stall- as in you have to really try to do it.

According to the show, part of the decision process was that Iran was sick of Iraq doing overfly's of Iran with thier Mig-25's zipping in at Mach 2.8 at 70,000 feet, and decided the Phoenix would be the best way to put an end to that nonsense.

14D and even the A+ now B is really a new animal, and is what the F-14 was always really envisioned to be. GE-F110 is the robust powerplant a fighter should have, it is very resiliant to the throttle chops and high AoA flying that ACM requires when the fight errodes from BVR to a bare knuckle merge...Curious to what Mudd thinks regarding the GE-F110 v. the PW F100 since the F-16 uses both, and he has more than likely flown both blocks.

The USAF version of the GE motor makes about 5k lbs more thrust than the D's naval version, doesn't it?

Depends on the variant...

The F-110 GE 400 for example found in the F-14 B/D is rated at 27,000 lbs per in zone five burner.

The F-110 GE 129 found in the F-16 and F-15E is rated at 28,984 lbs per in burner.

The latest F-110 variant, the F110 GE 132 that will be used in South Koreas F-15K and Block 60 F-16's is rated at 32,000 lbs per in burner.

GE has concieved that the F110 can max out at close to 36,000 lbs of thrust per in burner in future variants.

Pretty impressive powerplant technology.

The Lawn dart uses a couple of different versions of the GE-110
They use the F-110-GE100 and the F-110-GE129. The -129 is used in the Block 50 F-16. The -100 is used in the Block 30 and the block 40.
The block 25, 32, & 42 use the F-100-PW220. The Block 52 uses the -229 (P&W finally got it right with this version of the engine).
