Jewish settlers in the West Bank are being asked to trade in their guard dogs for pigs. The animals, considered unclean in Judaism for thousands of years, would help protect the settlements from attacks by Palestinians.
A company which supplies guard dogs to the settlements in the West Bank has asked senior rabbis for approval under Jewish law to train the pigs. The company says they are better than dogs because they have a stronger sense of smell. Because they are considered unclean by Islam as well, their presence could discourage Muslim attackers.
The settlements, built on occupied land in contravention of international law, are frequently attacked. Many are surrounded by high fences and guarded by Israeli soldiers.
"Pigs' sense of smell is far more developed than that of dogs," said Yekutiel Ben-Yakov of Gdud Haivri, the company that supplies guard dogs to settlements. "The pigs will also be able to identify weapons from huge distances, and walk in the direction of the terrorist, so pointing him out. And this animal is considered dangerous by Islam." Muslims also believe that dogs are unclean.
"The prohibition against raising pigs is well-known," Rabbi Daniel Shilo, head of a rabbinical council for settlers in the West Bank, said. "But since this is a matter of saving lives, it will be permissible to have the animal."
Despite the Jewish ban on pigs, pork is sold at many fashionable Jerusalem restaurants, though it usually has to be ordered as "white meat". Pork and bacon is also sold by butchers in Jerusalem.
The Israeli army is thought to have rejected suggestions that pigs could be used to detect explosives. It seems that would have been a step too far.

PIGS CAN BE TRAINED TO SMELL OUT WEAPONS,AND BOMBS,AND WILL ATTACK INTRUDERS.

PIGS ARE USED IN FRANCE (HAD TO SAY IT) TO FIND TRUFFELS.

Mudd, I love the sig.

I read an article somewhere about General Sherman. Sometime in WW I he executed some Moslem terrorists with bullets soaked in pigs blood and then burried them with the pigs. He let one of the prisoners go to tell the others. I will get the article from work and post it.

Gen. John J. "Blackjack" Pershing dealt with Islamist terror in the
Philippines in 1911. Pershing detailed a patrol to bring in six known
terrorists who had slain women and children in a backwoods village. Something like this, Hawg166?

The terrorists were required to dig their own graves, and then were lashed to stakes to await the firing squad. Several pigs were brought before them for slaughter.

"When you are buried," the officer of the detail told the terrorists, we will bury the pig offal with you. You'll never see paradise." And no virgins, either.

One of the terrorists was allowed to "escape" to return to his fellows to tell the awful story, as Pershing knew he would. There was no more
trouble in the neighborhood for years, for long after Pershing was long gone to France to command American doughboys in the Great War.

Pershing was a bad ass, but some times I think we could use another sherman. If he were here today to hear us talk about no collateral damage--it would be interesting.

Sorry that was a pretty poor post especially from a history major. I will do better research next time I promise.

This is probably a FOAF story (perhaps Homer32 might be able to shed some light on it).

I heard about 10 years ago from a friend in British customs, a story that the West German Police had trained a wild boar to act as a sniffer hog at one of their airports.

Everything was going fine until it detected a stash of coke in a travel bag, trampled the bag to pieces, inhaled a couple of kgs of China White and went stark raving apesh$t.

Seeing as this thing weighed about 200kg and was in no mood to calm down, the only thing the police could do was blow it away.
