Some Hogs have Litening or LANTIRN pods now.

LASTE is a radar, after a fashion.

<hr height=1 noshade id=quote></BLOCKQUOTE id=quote></font id=quote><font face="Verdana, Arial, Helvetica" size=2 id=quote>

LASTE is Not a radar, It is a "Weapon Computer" although it uses a Radar altimeter and special antennaes to collect the target deck height to compute the trigonometric angle-slant range-Hypotenuse for the piper Symbology.

It doesnt know what is out there. It takes the manual degrade tables for each specific weapon and computes it based on the "AGL" for the piper adjustments. It has no idea what is a target in the physical world. All it knows is what the radar altimeter tells it.

It saves the pilot the time of depressing mils for a given weapon, flying a perfect deployment angle, and computing the speed, altitude in his head for the correct time to pickle the weapon.

I know how LASTE works(thank you Dice, M&M, and Air2Mudd), but it DOES have a radar element to it, so it is sort of a radar...after a fashion.

Mainly i was just being a smart ass though. I'll try not to be so subtle next time....i forgot there were ex Marines here. ;)

Hehehe.

<BLOCKQUOTE id=quote><font size=1 face="Verdana, Arial, Helvetica" id=quote>quote:<hr height=1 noshade id=quote> I was curious about how the Warthog compares with the Marine's Harrier jump jet.

Cockpit
Harrier: HUD, Glass Cockpit, Night Capable
Warthog: HUD, Night Capable

Takeoff
Harrier: VSTOL
Warthog: CTOL

Cost
Harrier: $20 m
Warthog: $10 m

Armor
Warthog: Titanium armor plated

Compatible Weapons
Harrier: Aim-120, Aim-7, Aim-9, AGM-65, AGM-84, 25mm GAU-12 Cannon w/ 300 rounds, Iron, LGB's, JDAM, Rockets.
Warthog: Aim-9, AGM-65, 30mm GAU-8 gun w/ 1000 rounds, Iron, LGB's, Rockets

Paylaod
Harrier: 9 Hardpoints; 13,235 lbs stores.
Warthog: 11 Hardpoints; 16,000 lbs stores.

Avionics and Radar
Harrier: APG-65 Radar, Litening II Laser Targeting and TV Camera Recon, FLIR, and NVG
Warthog: WX-50 radar, FLIR, Laser

Engines
Harrier: (1) 23,800 lb thrust class [0.77]
Warthog: (2) 18,000 lb thrust class [0.71]

Speed
Harrier: Mach 0.9
Warthog: Mach .6

Combat Radius
Harrier: 103 miles
Warthog: 288 miles

<hr height=1 noshade id=quote></BLOCKQUOTE id=quote></font id=quote><font face="Verdana, Arial, Helvetica" size=2 id=quote>
I wonder where a lot of these stats came from about the HAWG. First off there is platty of glass in the cockpit. Lets see: The HUD combiner glass, the glass covering each engine instrument, the cabin pressure alt has a glass cover, the VVI HSI ALT ASI ADI all have glass. There is glass all over, plus the canopy. :)

CTOL Takeoff, can't argue but plane should go forward lever the hover stuff to the whirly-birds.

Cost of $10 mil. I don't know which version cost that the orginal I thought was in the neighborhood of $8.5 and today they should be more like $12 and with PE more, much more.

Armor..Titanium armor plated sure sure

Weapons forgetts to list all the other fun bombs. Not all bombs that hit target are "LASER" guided.

Avionics and Radar: This is classic, Radar FLIR and LASER wow. What A-10 has that integrated. Now we can talk the RADAR Altitmeter and the MAV being Flir and now LITENING and hell in few years maybe even SNIPER if were lucky. LOL

Combat Radius does that include with or with out drop tanks. 288?

Now as do how they compare, my IMHO the A-10 is far superior to everything as a CAS platform with an honorable mention to SPECTER 130's. The Harrier is a novelty and a toy for aviation history. Of course this is my humble opinion.

"Going up against tanks is not the harriers forte, besides, nothing nicer than the avenger cannon spewing out the wall of lead. after all, the gun wasnt built for the A-10, the A-10 was biilt for the gun!"

Actually, the AV-8B has a very powerful 25mm rotary cannon, but is limited by a smallish ammunition capacity.

btw, I'm designing a new A-10 (calling it A-10 2020, but it wont be a mod of warthog, just hitting the same CAS mission)
I want to know if the GAU-8 and/or it's ammo is used on anything other than A-10, the GAU-13pod, and the Goalkeeper defense system? Also Snipe can you do a per round energy comaprison between the Gau-8 ammo and the 25mm GAU-12 Equaliser ammo, I have a velocity of 3600fps for it(is it the same Bushmaster ammo used in the Bradly?). I want to incorporate a gun system that will be supportable and common with other systems in the future, I know the 25 cant match the GAU-8 but I wanna see how much less energy per round I would be looking at.

Because the A-10 has glass covering a few instruments in its cockpit does not mean that it is a 'glass cockpit' aircraft. 'Glass cockpit' generally refers to digital instrumentation, readouts, controls, etc. The A-10 doesn't have this.
