Pup, the (6) pre-production aircraft had slats and I'm pretty sure the 2 YA-10-As had them also, slats were a part of the A-10 from the very begining.

Ugly but well hung!

I'm being told by M&M he may have a picture of the first YA-10A (71-369) without slats...this will be news to me. I have pictures of the same jet taken a few years ago and it has slats...more to come I guess.

Dice,
I think he may be right. It seems to me they were an add on. I've got some pics of the YA-10s and they look like they don't have them. The pics aren't that good but I don't see the slat fence in the pictures.
I've got one for you though........
I looked up the Air Force Museum web site to look at the YA-10 pic they have (which does show slats), but the narrative says the YA-10 is no longer on display there.
Where did it go???????

DB, in the DVD I have both YA-10A have slats, I also talked to "Dave" here at the SPO and he said he remerbers 71-1369 didn't have slats when it first rolled-out but got refitted with them soon after leaving the factory.

It looks like slats were in the design from the start but for some reason (maybe the fly-off schedule) 71-1369 rolled out from the factory with out them but was quickly retrofitted. Hey you learn something every day!!

71-1370 is at langley being preped to be placed on a stick in the airpark!! Below is a picture of 71-369 taken around 1990 and you can see (if you look close) the salts are there.

Thanks for the pictures Koobster. I knew that the slats were an afterthought after the YA-10 had problems with engine stalls.

Also the wind fence was an after thought. The bombs on stations 5&7 would hang up due to air pressure differential. Only if they were parent mounted. Hey Dice I am going to SABCA next week for SLEP conference, you going to be there?
