While doing a little research this morning (things are kinda slow), I was wondering if the topic of building a unit database has ever been broached. As a A-10 patch collector I am always trying to determine if/when a unit flew A-10s, and which squadrons fell under which OGs which fell under which wings. The FTs are a good example, as they were under the 23 FW, then the 23 FG, and are now under the 4 FW. The 510th is another good example, having been a Bentwaters unit until 1993, then they went to Spang and later became the 81st while the unit itself (the 510th) went down to Aviano to activate as a Viper squadron.

What I would like to propose--if it doesn't exist already, at least outside of the collective knowledge of this forum--is a database of squadrons who flew the A-10, whent hey flew them and which groups/wings they were under. Any additional info would be nice, like this from the 510th's history page:

<BLOCKQUOTE id=quote><font size=1 face="Verdana, Arial, Helvetica" id=quote>quote:<hr height=1 noshade id=quote>The squadron began providing close air support for NATO exercises, starting August 1979 and this until December 1992. The 510th deployed aircraft and personnel to Turkey to support Kurdish relief in Northern Iraq, from 6 September-10 December 1991; from 8 April-10 June 1992; and from 6 August-30 October 1992 and in support of Operation DESERT STORM and Operation PROVIDE COMFORT. <hr height=1 noshade id=quote></BLOCKQUOTE id=quote></font id=quote><font face="Verdana, Arial, Helvetica" size=2 id=quote>

Once we get the major AD, Guard and Reserve units, we can tackle deployed ops such as the 131 EFS/Killer Bees. It would be nice to put this info on a well-known A-10 web site (hint, hint) if it can be hosted. I am not a database brain so if anyone has any suggestions that surpase an Excel spreadsheet please go ahead and throw them out as well, half the battle will be trying to organize and present this info.

So, having said that, is anyone interested?

Cheers! M2

23FG was also under the 347FW when me, Dice, and PRK were there, then transferred to 4FW.

Mad Max, the FT's were never just the 23 FW, and has never been just the 23rd. In June '92, it stood up as the 23d Wing (A-10s and C-130s), then in about 97, it became the 23 FG under the 347 FW at Moody. Then in June 00, it realigned from the 347th to the 4 FW at Seymour Johnson. Hope this helps.

The Buzzards left Bentwaters and the 81st TFW and came under the 52nd FW at Spang before deactivating and then reactivating at Aviano with F-16's.
The 81st Fighter Squadron already at Spang with F-4G/F-16 took over the Hogs left by the Buzzards.

Sounds like a good idea and this may be a good place to start your research....

Sorry about my error on the FT, it just displays my point that it would be nice to capture all this and get it down on record. Based on my confusion and the comments generated, it appears the need for a historical record is legit!

Dice, I will try that URL when I get to work, as I have whined in the past, I cannot access .MIL sites from home.

I have seen info from AFHRA/RSO before and honestly (and with regret) I have to say I don't think they are doing a very good job. For one, they are still showing the 510th as an A-10 squadron, but they do show they moved to Aviano in 1994. Also, they do not seem to list units no longer active, such as the 91 TFS, 92 TFS, 509 TFS or 511 TFS from the 81 TFW. The 78th is listed but they inactivated last year (see: http://www.78th-bushmasters.org/78fs-de ... ioning.htm).

Still, what is there is useful, I just need to find time at work to download the info. Greg at http://www.tankkiller.com has got a great unit listing but I am sure it is not complete. I am posting it here so people can add and modify as necessary...

You can add the 55FS at Shaw, converted from 21FS and 40 Flight Test Squadron at Eglin.

Add the 10th TFW including the 509th/511th TFS at RAF Alconbury.
The Pirates and Vultures moved to Alconbury from Bentwaters when shelter space became available after the departure of the RF-4C's of the 1st TRS in the late 80's.

Funny you should mention that, I just got a 10 TFW patch in the mail today...nothing rare, I just never got one. I do have the 10 TFW gaggle patch with the A-10 shield on it, as well as the 1992 Return to the Sty and the 10 TFW Return to CONUS patch.

I also got the Combat Aircraft A-10 book today, nice but I was somewhat shocked to find I paid $15 with shipping from the UK, and when it arrived it had a discount sticker of £1.99 on the back! Oh well, it's a nice book and I would have never have found it otherwise.

Cheers! M2

Another little known fact about the Alconbury Hogs is that one of their squadrons (I think the 511th) lost their FY80/81/82 jets in about 1990 when they were transferred to the 103rd FS PANG.
As replacements, the 511th took over the older FY77 176th TFS Hogs when they converted to the F-16.
After the deactivation of the 10th TFW, one of the jets 77-259 was donated to the American Air Museum at Duxford, the jet had originally been amongst the first deliveries to the 81st TFW at Bentwaters in about 79/80 before going to Truax and ending up back where it started in the UK.

M2, hope you don't mind if I tag a request onto your thread but this would be the perfect time to also list the units mascots. As you guys know I posted a "dream" I have of a door art or painting which would contain all the unit mascots in a "historical battle" mural. As you gather the unit histories could you also please list the unit's mascot as well?

It looks like (right now) I will be staying with the A-10 for a bit longer after my retirement and if I can ever get a backer, or come-up with the money myself, this "dream" may get done someday. It would be nice to have all the mascots already listed when and if I ever get this project off the ground.

Hey, that's great news, congrats! Of course I don't mind if you add your request, we're all Hog buddies here and the more info the better! I have learned a ton from this forum already and as I am kinda slow on the uptake (from age) that is really saying something!

M2,
THE 23RD BEFORE JUNE 92 WAS THE 23RD TFW AT EAFB LA.
THE 76TH TAC FIGHTER SQUADRON'S MASCOTT WAS THE "VANGUARDS"
