I've found that most flyovers or statics that aren't conducted by the demo teams are conducted by guard and reserve units. The exact reasoning behind this is varied. The active AF maintains demo teams as their official flying ambassadors. Additionally, the active AF units have a much higher ops tempo (even at home) which basically requires their jets to be at home (flying / phase / busted / etc) all the time. Additionally with shorter downtime between deployments, increased flight hours and plain old age, the A-10 fleet in general is on it's ass much more that it used to be.

Most guard reserve units have a much slower ops tempo at home and longer downtime between real-world deployments which gives their jets a little more availability when it comes to flyovers and airshows. Of course it also helps that the jets are "assets" of states which are not necessarily very restrictive in their use as long as all regulations are followed.

AD units also like to take the weekends off when ever we can. These kind of events are exactly why we have the Guard in the first place.

Ok....so you're saying guard units are only good for fly-overs? I can see this thread turning to sh*t too...here we go again....

OMG I knew the minute I read the response to this one it was going south in a hurry. I will only say I believe Guard and Reserve A-10 units are probably some of the most "active" in the USAF. In other words just as busy as the Active duty units.

It's all in good fun, guys. I make fun of the guard guys all day long and they make fun of me. People are taking things way too seriously. BL--when it comes down to mission completion, it gets done... guard, active, reserve or otherwise.

I understand that, but I also understand that he was probably kidding.

I'm an active pilot in a guard squadron and have been giving these guys crap for years. They turn around and sling it back and we all go home happy.

OK, let's all pretend my post said this...

"Hey I just watched a flyover of 4 Hawgs at the Atlanta Motor Speedway. I don't care where they are from I just wondered if anyone else had seen it."

There...no need to argue now...Hawgs are Hawgs:)

I woke up in a good mood and then I took it the same way as PRK did. I will leave Coaches post alone and let the BC , PA , BA , ID, KC, and other MA guys tackle that one.

By this time tomorrow I shall have gained either a pearage or Westminster Abbey........Nelson

Well this thread is already at rock bottom so let me add my 2 cents, not about the Active, Guard, and Reserve debate but to ask Hawg78642 if you could please downsize that picture you use as a sig? man I have to look at a wallpaper size picture to read four words...and it's not that great of a picture anyway!!

Sorry people! actually I deleted it the other night off my profile but yet it still appears in all my posts unless I go about and delete the HTML address manually from each post. I photoshopped this pic down to 350x263 so it should be pretty safe to use on here now. Again, sorry for you dialup guys and sig haters :) - Mark

Thanks Mark, I don't hate sigs but I am a 56ker! <img src=newicons/madani.gif border=0 align=middle> BTW it will contiune to show in any old posts because it's already stored on peoples hard-drives, if you hit the F-5 key it should go away and it should not appear in any of your new posts.

Man... Dice, I was a 56k user til just recently when we got cable...my god what a difference, you dont even know!
I got some bad news about Hawgsmoke....We are sending jets down there, but they dont need us crew chiefs to go on the trip because Barksdale guys apparently are gonna take care of the workload for us. Kinda sucks because I was dying to go down there and check it out! Oh well, hope another trip pops up soon! - Mark

Hawg78642, I will be getting cable soon but can't now because they are doing work on the "system" in my area.
Sorry to hear about you not making it to Hawgsmoke, I known that's a bummer when your jet goes and you don't!
