Probably a student doing a report on it or something.

If you do a forum search you'll see there are LOTS of threads discussing it here already.

Probably why no one felt a need to rehash it.

Bottom line on DU...it's safe to handle, it isn't safe to breath the dust, and it kills tanks like nobodys business...hence my love for it. :)

thanks m21,
i'll look more carefully through existing forum materials.

my primary concern is with our men on the ground charged with sifting through the vehicle kills, etc.
i've just begun reading up on this (du) and other highly effective munitions, the health risks associated with which seem to have to date been more or less hidden, and in some cases distorted.

i am not military personnel, but a supportive and concerned citizen.

Yeah, I heard from a "supportive citizen" once who sent me a large amount of research on the effects of DU. The disappointment, it was all unfounded. Yeah, it sounded professionally written, and yeah, I started to question being around it...but it had 0 references. Pretty unprofessional coming from a U of I professor, when he has no sources available to back the computer printouts he sent me. Be careful what you believe and do your research wisely...

Couple of things which leads me to belive the is a "tree huggin'" issue.

1. The person is concerned with "our men on the ground" not a family member or friend..strange...must be just a kind soul!

2. Bingo Raven, broad statments with no supporting info..."the health risks associated with which seem to have to date been more or less hidden, and in some cases distorted."

Just another person who wants to take one of the most effective weapons we have away because it MAY pose a slight health risk....like 500 pounds of explosives in a MK-82 isn't dangerous!! More US troops would die without the use of DU than will (may) die from health risks working around it!!

Any chemist knows that if it is "depleted" then it has no yielded radioactive properties.

DU does not explode, it disapates. Uranium has a High Mass when it hits it translates a great deal of kinetic Energy.Since it is more dense than Steels or Alloys. It goes through it like butter. You hit any metal with sufficient speed, the Heat and Pressure will cause it to Melt. The idea that DU is a little ABOMB is False. It is only a highly Dense Material.

we expose ourselves to more radiation stepping out of shelter into the sun, than what you could ever recieve by being locked away in a dark hole for the rest of your life with a bandiler of DU wrapped around your neck.

The Tree huggers tried this crap back in the 80's and some congressmen yeilded to the political pressure. The funny thing is that nobody could prove that it was Hazardous to be used on training ranges, or around the ground crews that support them. Eventually the govt after wasting millions upon millions of dollars. Came to the realisations that it was not an occupational hazard.

The facts are. The DU issue is one of those i'll informed fairy tales that will never die and go away.

You can take a mag annomoly detector, and go to any impact bombing range in the country, and pic k up radioactive emmissions. it is what happens to metal that has been "Fissionioned" from an explosion.

Thank you Dice and Mudd. We put ourselves in harms way in any military action, and DU does not increase our risk. We know what we put at stake anyway...besides, I am sure all military members all remember the all important question at MEPS: "Do you have a problem with the use of nuclear weapons if you are called upon to do so?" So why are we concerned about DEPLETED uranium?

DU is hazardous when it is in a dust form in and around a target that has been struck, but not from radioactivity. It is toxic in that is a heavy metal, no different than mercury. When it gets in your lungs, it can do bad things. If you wear a dust mask, you are safe.

Of course, it is lethal when hitting something at 3000 ft/sec...the pyrophoric effect and spallation is highly disorienting and causes physical and mental shock. Not to mention that your eyeballs explode from their sockets from the overpressure.

FORT DIX, N.J. - The U.S. Army is conducting medical tests on a handful of GIs who complained of illnesses after reported exposure to depleted uranium in Iraq.

Up to six soldiers from a National Guard unit based in Orangeburg, N.Y., have undergone exams at Fort Dix, and three of them remain there under observation, Fort Dix spokeswoman Carolee Nisbet said Monday.

"We are following up on this. We are on top of it. It's not something that has fallen by the wayside," she said.

Of nine members of the unit examined by a doctor at the request of the New York Daily News, four had "almost certainly" inhaled radioactive dust from spent U.S. artillery shells containing depleted uranium, the newspaper reported Monday.

Six of the nine contacted the newspaper after unsuccessfully appealing to the Army for testing because of unexplained illnesses, the Daily News reported.

The soldiers complained of headaches, fatigue, shortness of breath, nausea, dizziness, joint pain and unusually frequent urination.

The exposures apparently occurred last summer when the 442nd Military Police Co. served in Samawah, Iraq. Most members of the unit, which includes many New York police officers, firefighters and prison guards, remain in Iraq.

Military medical officials from Walter Reed Army Medical Center in Washington and the Army's Center for Health Promotion and Preventive Medicine conducted testing at Fort Dix, Nisbet said.

The Army would not identify the soldiers or say whether testing revealed contamination or illness.

All National Guard and Reserve soldiers mobilized through Fort Dix receive physical exams upon their return from overseas, Nisbet said. The soldiers who complained of ailments asked for and received a second round of evaluations, she said.

Depleted uranium, which is left over from the process of enriching uranium for use as nuclear fuel, is an extremely dense material that the U.S. and British militaries use for tank armor and armor-piercing weapons. It is far less radioactive than natural uranium.

According to a Depleted Uranium Information Web page posted by the Army, depleted uranium recently provided to the Pentagon by the U.S. Department of Energy contained trace amounts of contaminants like neptunium, plutonium, americium, technitium-99 and uranium-236.

"These contaminants in (depleted uranium) add less than one percent to the radioactivity of (depleted uranium) itself," the Web page said.

"Medical scientists consider this insignificant."

Army spokeswoman Cynthia O. Smith would not comment Monday on whether other troops have complained of similar ailments or whether the Pentagon would take precautions aimed at preventing future exposure.

For not wanting to re-hash the topic, we certainly walked right into his/her request. Seems to me any munition is of a particular risk when one is on the receiving end! (Or being careless at the other end).

THE HEAVY METAL PART IS THE REAL PROBLEM,LIKE COACH SAID FROM DU.
THE DUST OR INGESTING THE RESIDUE CAN BE A BIG PROBLEM
LIKE,LEAD,MERCURY ETC....

THE VA HAS HAD A EVAL IN PLACE FOR YEARS AFTER THE 1ST GULFWAR BUT TURNS DOWN THE REQUEST MOST OF THE TIME.

DU IS A EFFECTIVE WEAPON AND SHOULD BE USED AND KEPT BUT OUT OF THE 1000'S WHO HAVE CAME IN CONTACT WITH ITS DUST YOU CANT SAY NO ONE GOT SICK FROM IT.
EVERYONE IS DIFFERENT , BUT WHEN SOMEONE COMES UP SICK ALL THINGS SHOULD BE LOOKED AT.
.IF MY MEMORY IS RIGHT ITS BLOOD AND URINE COLLECTION OVER A 24 HOUR PERIOD THEY THEN CHECK THE LEVELS FOR HEAVY METAL. IF IT SHOWS HIGH COUNT THEN THEY CAN LOOK FOR THE CAUSE.
I THINK THEY DO THE SAME FOR OTHER HEAVY METALS TOO

DU HAS SAVED A HELL'VA LOT MORE LIFES THAN WILL EVER GET SICK FROM IT.
I JUST WOULDNT WANT TO BE THE 1 WHO GETS SICK.

I'LL PROBABLY GET HAMMERED ON THIS ONE

HERE'S THE EVAL PROTOCAL FOR DU
http://www1.va.gov/gulfwar/docs/DUHandb ... 122304.DOC

THEY HAVE THE PROTOCAL PLUS THE TEST ETC......
I HAD ASKED IN 99 FOR THE TEST WHEN I FIRST GOT SICK,BUT AFTER THE M.S. DX THEY TOLD ME IT WAS OF "NO USE" SO I DROPPED IT.
THIS IS THE LASTEST VERSION WITH OIF VETS INCLUDED.

YOU GUYS KNOW I'M NO TREE HUGGER,PLUS I WOULD NEVER WANT DU TAKEN AWAY.
WHEN YOU WANT ANSWERS TO "WHY" YOU LOOK AT EVERYTHING FOR YOUR FAMILIES SAKE.
I'M JUST BEING UP FRONT WITH MY OWN EXPRIEANCE .
