It's true.
Roll rate will increase apx 50% with the brakes opening up to a point past your 15% reference.
It will flatten out and then return to a roll rate equal to the brakes closed when they are almost fully open.
Cheers

I have never seen data, but I can say that I overheard conversations between aero/performance engineers that confirms higher roll rates with the speedbrakes open a bit.

probly due to a limitation of the top half of the split ailerons to crank all the way down with it closed, And vise versa for the bottom half going up.

It's not commonly done, but it is true. The main guys that you'll see doing it are the demo team pilots. Next airfield demo practice or real show, keep an eye on the speedbrakes during the initial part of turns.

The procedure is spelled out in the demo maneuver literature. It states that the pilot should "FAN" the speedbakes at each point of the 4 point roll.

Never did it. Too much drag in the tradeoff. Only application I can see is when attempting to reverse on Mudd and his F-15 for that low aspect gun track...

HAHAHAHAHA

Here lets replay this shall we, Hog low Quarter, I try to merge at 450, I'm double beeper try to offset high for a Yo yo one circle fight. W30 extends to two circle cuts inside of me, I hit the burner as i scream OMFG and try to go verticle, But realise he set me up to extend opposite direction of the sun.(heater avoidance trashed) to get out of his control zone, cause at this point i look like prime bikini realestate... W30 starts saying some really cool Shit on the radio and presses the VTR. Im emptying all 4 buckets! Next 30mm or the 9 hits me in the burner can as my Guts splash all over the dash... I am the next geek of the week in the hog log.. I can see the HawgDawgs doing the High 5 in the turtle now...

BTDT.. one time too many... Never merge with a low and slow... High Rate turn aircraft.

yes... If hes not in the Notch and i can paint... Ill take the less manly option and go for the Sparrow or 120 uncaged kill.

Some time its easy to be hard and hard to be smart about it. Better yet, I'll send the 1st lt in to foul out and clean up. Of course theres always another hog out there that can burp a 1 mile slant accurately. and it would only take a couple Du's to end our battle cry.

Never wrestle with a Hog, you both get muddy and the Hog loves it.

Seems to be relatively accurate in my memory. Remember the last tussle with an Eagle like this:

Hit the merge as fast as I can go (330), fight's on, Eagle blows through at 400+ and immediately goes vertical, Hit the left rudder (should've fanned the speedbrakes!), roll left and pull the nose up as high as I can get it to go at 21K', beeper's already telling me to give it up, see the Eagle curse himself as he lights burner to get higher since he didn't extend in the vertical enough to escape, Aim 9M-9 good tone and a Fox Two with flares (dammit!)closing to 3000' at 60 aspect, Eagle driver slams on the brakes as do I and it's a race to 130, he gets there first as I pass his 3/9, 10 low 100' above the floor, I kill the last 10 knots and regain 3/9 as he slowly moves 400' in front of me in a flat scissors, I see him light the wick and climb away as I smash through the floor after about 80 secs of fight. Turns out he hit the floor just prior to me. We're both proverbial smoking holes.

Don't have time to fully describe what happened day 2 against the strike eagles. It'd take a long time to describe 7 Aim-9 shots and three gun tracks in two engagements. BTW, we took second in that BFM competition, C models, Hawgs, Vipers, and lastly were the beagles...
