And we wonder why we can not discipline our children anymore.

Stupid they both were minors out of control.

Court: Mom's Eavesdropping Violated Law

Thu Dec 9,11:32 PM ET

SEATTLE - In a victory for rebellious teenagers, the state Supreme Court ruled Thursday that a mother violated Washington's privacy law by eavesdropping on her daughter's phone conversation.

Privacy advocates hailed the ruling, but the mother was unrepentant.

"It's ridiculous! Kids have more rights than parents these days," said mom Carmen Dixon, 47. "My daughter was out of control, and that was the only way I could get information and keep track of her. I did it all the time."

The Supreme Court ruled that Dixon's testimony against a friend of her daughter should not have been admitted in court because it was based on the intercepted conversation. The justices unanimously ordered a new trial for Oliver Christensen, who had been convicted of second-degree robbery in part due to the mother's testimony.

The case started with a purse-snatching four years ago that shocked the island town of Friday Harbor, population 2,000. Two young men knocked down an elderly woman, breaking her glasses, and stole her purse. Christensen, then 17, was a suspect.

Sheriff Bill Cumming asked Dixon, whose daughter was friends with Christensen, to be alert for any possible evidence. When Christensen called the Dixon house later, Lacey Dixon, then 14, took the cordless phone into her bedroom and shut the door. The mother hit the "speakerphone" button and took notes on the conversation — in which Christensen said he knew where the purloined purse was.

The ruling will likely not result in parents being prosecuted for snooping, Cumming said. But it forbids courts and law enforcement from using the fruits of such snooping.

Federal wiretap law has been interpreted to allow parents to record their child's conversations. But Washington privacy law is stricter. Washington is one of 11 states that requires consent from all parties involved before a conversation may be intercepted or recorded.

"The Washington statute ... tips the balance in favor of individual privacy at the expense of law enforcement's ability to gather evidence without a warrant," Justice Tom Chambers wrote.

That right to individual privacy holds fast even when the individuals are teenagers, the court ruled.

"I don't think the state should be in the position of encouraging parents to act surreptitiously and eavesdrop on their children," agreed attorney Douglas Klunder, who filed a brief supporting Christensen on behalf of the American Civil Liberties Union (news - web sites).

Lacey Dixon, now 18, graduated from high school and is attending a massage therapy school, her mother proudly reported. Christensen's whereabouts are unknown.

Dixon has a 15-year-old son still at home, whose phone conversations she sometimes secretly monitors. She said she'll stop that now.

"If it's illegal, I won't do it," she sighed.

The ACLU needs to stay out of family business. I will continue to "spy" on my daughter's activities no matter what the government says. I dare them to come and get me. That reminds me, I have got to reload my firearms.

I've got two wonderful children...but that never stopped me from sitting on the stairs and spot checking phone conversations. Plus I was involved in their activities, like band and class trips as a chaperone. Kept my distance, sure, but still got to see who their friends were and how they all interacted. That way <b>I</b> could sleep at night when they got old enough to go out on their own and stay out late.<img src=icon_smile_big.gif border=0 align=middle>

So, you have trouble. We all have trouble. Build a bridge and get over it.

I MIGHT BE 1100 MILES FROM MY GIRLS,BUT I KNOW WHEN THEIR UP TO SOMETHING OR DID SOMETHING I'M NOT SUPPOSED TO KNOW.
THE EX USUALLY GIVES THEM AWAY BY THE WAY SHE ACTS.

I HAVE NO COMPLAINTS,VERY GOOD GIRLS THEIR MORE LIKE 25&23 THEN 17&15.
THE YOUNGST ONE DID GET SUSPENDED FOR 3 DAYS IN 8TH GRADE FOR "NAILING"A BOY WHO GRABBED HER TIT<img src=newicons/anim_shock.gif border=0 align=middle><img src=newicons/anim_furious.gif border=0 align=middle> SO SHE "COLD COCKED HIM"<img src=icon_smile_approve.gif border=0 align=middle><img src=newicons/anim_lol.gif border=0 align=middle><img src=newicons/anim_lol.gif border=0 align=middle>
HER MOTHER WAS PISST-OFF SHE DIDNT TELL THE TEACHER SO SHE HAD TO CALL DAD AND TELL ME WHAT SHE DID.
I LISTENED AND TOLD HER" YOU BROKE THE RULES,AND YOU PAY THE PRICE" NOW I SAID "DID HE CRY"? SHE SAID "YES" I REPLIED "FROM NOW ON ANYONE GRABS YOU LIKE THAT "DROP HIM TO HIS KNEES"<img src=icon_smile_approve.gif border=0 align=middle><img src=icon_smile_approve.gif border=0 align=middle>
BUT IF SHE OR HER SISTER SCREW-UP I'LL COME DOWN,NO MATTER HOW I FEEL AND USE THEIR "SAVINGS ACCOUNTS" TO FUND THE TRIP AND ALL EXPENSES AND THEN I'LL PERSONALLY PUT MY "FOOT IN THEIR ASS!!"

SAD THING IS THEY KNOW I WOULD DO IT!

When i was a good Church going boy in my teenage years before the military ripped my soul apart. one of my teachers taught me a valuable lesson. It is a simple one and it had worked well for me with the kids.

you put a bowl of snacks on a table, and in this lesson you teach about needs and greed. it is a simple test of discipline, with it comes a consequence.

You have to establish trust and patterns of behavior long before they start to get temptations.

Respect has to be earned every day, and if your kids do things you do not want them to do then somewhere along the way you had failed in earning your kids respect.

IF i spend an extra 5 minutes a day with my kids more than normal, It pays off in spades, Theyll dump their firends and any risky potential to hang with dad and i think thats great, in fact, Im going paintballing with my boys this weekend. it is little things. I keep all my activities at home, I gave up the booze long ago.

Family is an investment. and if that doesnt work well...... ever see what a 11-1/2 double wide flight boot does......<img src=icon_smile_cool.gif border=0 align=middle> Which has happened less than twice in the past 11 years.

Violence never accomplishes anything with the ones you love. Doesnt belong in the home.

I can bet with absolute certainty that if you met me today, you would have no idea it was me.

Snipe is actually a really decent Guy. I would not confuse our angst as our character traits, when in company of respectable folks.

Dont take the ribbing so personal. ......

Put in these terms I dont know if you have daughter but when I look back at what I wanted, when I wanted it, and how much I would have promised to get I NEVER WANT MY DAUGHTER TO BECOME A TEENAGER. With my luck God will have a sense of humor, hopefully he does not reward perseverance any better in the future.

Mudd I am with you. When I look at how much I wanted and prayed for some really misguided stuff in my teenage years, I am glad the Allmighty though it best to keep me out of it all. I think He saved me a lot of heartache I couldnt have envisioned.
I try to spend alot of extra time with my boys. I have 3 of them 14, 11 and 3. I wanted a little girl after eight years and convinced Amie to have one more. We got a third boy. Its tough because as they get older it costs more to do cool stuff with them. Not that evrything has to be exspensive but boys are boys. Last year a freind gave my to oldest a pair of 1982 Puch Magnum MK II mopeds. There just like little motorcycles and next year my oldest will be able to register his as his first vehicle. Its really cool actually. We started a worm stand last year and the boys made almost $ 900 selling crawlers. He takes alot of his money and puts it into that. But I am like you, I will do anything at all to make sure that there is never a day when my boys wake up and say that they just dont want to be around Dad or they trust his judgements anymore.

Dice, I'm with you brother. Those kids wouldn't be in any domed tent, either, it would be two shelter halves put together and it would be set up by them - if they wanted a 'roof' over their heads!

Nowadays that would be considered child cruelty or child endangerment. 'F' 'em, is what I say!

ATTACK!
