Australia MP targets toxic toads

From the BBC website

http://news.bbc.co.uk/2/hi/asia-pacific/4431645.stm

An Australian MP has caused a stir by suggesting a brutal method of controlling the spread of cane toads in the country's Northern Territory.

David Tollner, a Liberal Party MP from the area, urged people to kill the poisonous amphibians with cricket bats and golf clubs.

There could be as many as 100m cane toads in Australia, and they are considered an highly dangerous pest.

Efforts to eradicate them have so far failed to make an impact on numbers.

Toxic skins

Cane toads are big, ugly creatures, introduced into Australia more than 70 years ago to try to stop cane beetles destroying crops.

The experiment has been a disaster.

The population of these toxic amphibians has exploded and they're advancing up to 50km (30 miles) every year.

Last month, they reached the outskirts of Darwin.

Fresh water crocodiles, dingoes and kangaroos have died after eating their highly toxic skins.

Hit or freeze?

The Northern Territory government responded by launching a competition to find the best way of trapping cane toads.

David Tollner's own rather drastic solution owes much to the way the problem was tackled when he was a child.

"We hit them with cricket bats, golf clubs and the like," he told ABC radio.

"Things were a bit different, most kids had a slug gun or an air rifle and we would get stuck into them with that sort of thing as well.

"If people could be encouraged to do it rather than discouraged the better the chance will be of stopping the cane toads arriving in Darwin and other parts of northern Australia."

Animal welfare groups have said Mr Tollner's idea is inhumane. They recommend putting cane toads into a freezer until they die.

A special campaign is also underway to protect endangered species such as the northern quail from this escalating environmental menace.

A DVD advising the community how to repel the threat posed by cane toads has been translated into six indigenous languages as the Northern Territory prepares for an onslaught...

When we were kids, we found putting a bicycle pump up their ass and pumping real fast worked as well.

And I wonder how many kids will die when they take a frozen toad out of their left wing tree hugging parents freezer and mistake it for some modern style popsicle and eat it...

Reminds me of the Kudzo Surface Vine that was introduced to states like Georgia etc, to Prevent Erosion. Now the southerners are complaining at how the Vine has taken over the South, and has emproached on agriculture and its Water needs.

they should see how the jefferson parish swat team does use them for target practice. Some times shooting a hundred neutria rats a night with silencers and night scopes. anyone stationed in louisiana knows what nutria are will give the rest of you pics. they were brought here for their fur, and escaped during a hurricane since then they have eaten large portions of the swamp and well mutiplied. It has gotten so bad some people are trying to convince people they are good eating. You know dem cajuns will eat anything.

well since it's ok to shoot non-native species, I do my best to turn them inside out.

In the last place we were swamped with Starlings and I used to perform my own private little cull early in the mornings.

The only problem was being in a built up area I had to be pretty discrete.

All was well until one was sat on a TV arial singing it's little heart out.

It was so happy it pissed me off, so I blew it away and got a instant lights out.

Problem was, when it died it got a grip on the arial and just sort of hung there swinging in the breeze.

And very, very obvious it was too.

I had to put about a dozen rounds into it before it finally fell off.

Good way of getting rid of the toads
no 1 buy some lighter fluid
no 2 buy a lighter

1st step spray toad with lighter fluid
2nd step light toad

this will then cause the toad to hop off on fire
best done at night for the best affects

all the grandma's would poke me at weddings saying '' youre next !!!!'',
they stopped it when i did the same to them at funerals

Here's an improvement: Instead of lighter fluid, use an aerosol can. Better distance

I'm thinking the baseball bats and golf clubs would be a bad idea. You smack a semi-squishy animlal with a metal bat and its going to get messy......now if that mess is "toxic toad juice" isn't that just going to spread the poisons around to kill other living things?
