A beer is any of a variety of alcoholic beverages produced by the fermentation of starchy material derived from grains or other plant sources. So the term applies to beer, larger and ale.

All beer requires yeast to produce alcohol.

There are two basic categories of yeast, Larger and Ale (sometimes called Beer).

What is the difference?

Well there are two main differences. First Larger yeast is bottom fermenting and Ale yeast is top-fermenting. Here is a basic definition of each:

Lager
A classification of beer styles made with a bottom fermenting yeast, lagers generally are smooth, elegant, crisp, and clean.
Lager Yeast
Also known as bottom-fermenting yeast, this teasy does best at temperatures between 33-50 degrees F. Has a tendency not to flocculate or form a head of yeast on the surface of the brew.

Ale (sometimes called Beer)
A beer style. A style made with a top-fermenting yeast. They are generally hearty, robust, and fruity.
Ale Yeast
Saccharomyces cerevisiae. Performs well at temperatures between 55-70 degrees F. Also referred to as "top-fermenting yeast". Top-fermenting yeast is anaerobic and always forms a sediment on the bottom.

So as you see the Larger is a bottom fermenting beer.

No jokes please...

Wow! Nice description 44. I have been a homebrewer for about a year now and do mostly Ales, the temps are easier to deal with in the house. Ales are amazingly simple to do.

Thanks, I'd like to claim it as all my own work, but it's actaully a compilation of stuff pulled from the web and just worded in a way so that (hopefully) anybody anywhere can understand the differences.

I just got bored explaining the difference between Ale and Larger as:

Larger you can see through...
Ale/Beer you can't...

It's been years since I did any home brewing.

The last DIY stuff I had was in Libya and it was a spirit made by the local expats called Flash.

Named apparently because of what happens to it if you get it too close to a naked flame...

Nothing like a good home brew to cure what "ale's" you!

30MM, your puns are now starting to cause physical symptoms of discomfort...

Have you read the "Hitch Hikers Guide to the Universe"..?

Here's an extract in which we could easily swap poetry for your jokes.

quote:
Vogon poetry is of course the third worst in the Universe.

The second worst is that of the Azagoths of Kria. During a recitation by their Poet Master Grunthos the Flatulent of his poem "Ode To A Small Lump of Green Putty I Found In My Armpit One Midsummer Morning" four of his audience died of internal haemorrhaging, and the President of the Mid-Galactic Arts Nobbling Council survived by gnawing one of his own legs off. Grunthos is reported to have been "disappointed" by the poem's reception, and was about to embark on a reading of his twelve- book epic entitled My Favourite Bathtime Gurgles when his own major intestine, in a desperate attempt to save life and civilization, leapt straight up through his neck and throttled his brain.

"Grunthos the Flatulent"

I remember a thread recently that sounds remarkably familiar to this.

I had a Budweiser "Select" recently, I had a hard time finishing it. It was awful. Watered down and almost no taste at all. Sure its easy to "finish clean" when its almost there already. My dad figured out along time ago why some beer goes through you so fast....it doesnt have to stop and change color.

That's a new one on me. But from your description, I won't be in a hurry to try it.

I do have a soft spot for the Asian Largers, very easy to drink.

The more I think about it, the more your Dad's advice rings true...

Guess that's why it's in a brown bottle, too, or you'd think twice before you bought it.

Good info except it is Lager not larger. As in you want to drink a lager and wish you were larger!

Oops...

Spelling was never my strong point.

Perhaps I had a few to many Lagers before I tried to spell Larger.

Thanks Strat...

Hmmm so you brew your own beer huh M&M? Sounds interesting, i've actually never tried a home brewed beer.

If you decide to make extra one day and i'll give you a place to send one!

Oh yeah, and as for the budweiser select if that tastes anything like the michalob ultra light i had (about 2 sips of before i pourer it down the drain) it is absolutely not worth it!

I've heard the german beers were good, but having never been to germany i don't know.

German beers for the most part are excellent, but I had a few bad ones while I was there. They have some very strict rules regarding how their beer is made. Ive had good results with the homebrew. A coworker and myself brewed up 5 gallons of brown ale and 5 gallons of hefeweizen. They were ready this past weekend and I "test flew" both. I thought they were great but I'm a bit biased.....lol

Perhaps around the 4th..?
