Salute to all soldiers, veterans and their families. Without them no control or peace. And we in Europe know what peace is. Sixty years ago were mine (grand-)parents under a regime. Thanks to to allies we are free.

my grandfather taught people to drive higgins boats, his ship got sunk before he was shipped out to Europe. What a generation.

On a light side did you know that there was a brothel in new orleans very close to the higgins factory which ran 24/7. Legend has it that madam would complain about the plants noise and destroying the mood.

watch history channel on the 5 star generals and admirals. In it Admiral Nimitz early in his career turned down an offer to earn 25,000 per year with a five year contract to stay in the Navy and earn 3500 per year. God bless him.

did you see the history channel special on Iwa Jima. 7000 men dead on such a small island. the projections were that invasion of Japan would have meant the US would have had to be willing to sacrifice 1 million men. I can not imagin going to the american people today and saying we are going to end terrorism for all time but we have to to loose 1 million men--that generation had a heart that and willingness to server on a mass scale we will never see again.

Mattlott, in ww1 was it even worser. Villages and cities has pall-battalions. That will say, you sign for the army and go, but also your brothers, friends and family. Sometimes in one strike at the front a whole street of a town lost their men. After a few of this, the pall-battalions had to split up in regular battalions. Lord Kitchnener has made a big mistake with that batallions idea.
World War One is the war where a whole generation almost is killed at a front.

But, every war is a drama for families that lost a love-one.

Not for a long haul, daily major campaigns, anyway.

Okay, i read your words again Mattlott. I mussed say, you have a point about that. When I see war movies about ww1 and ww2 you see the people stand together and behind a decision of the politicians, for 4/5 years long.
And now, when something happen. Are the people first behind the politicians, but when it takes longer than came the first protests.

I fear the idiots of my generation would pull a france and just put up the white flag.
