This song illustrates the impact that street racing had upon pop culture during this time period. Evidence that cars were a popular theme in pop culture is illustrated in other songs such as The Beach Boys's "Little Deuce Coupe" and "409", as well as Jan and Dean's " Drag City", and "Hot Rod Lincoln" by Commander Cody and His Lost Airmen. Much like today, cars were a status symbol in this time period. Those with the fastest cars gained the most respect. As a result, much time was devoted to this process and modifying cars became a popular hobby. This trade was commonly shared amongst teenage boys who used their souped up cars to demonstrate their masculinity, which in turn was used to pick up girls. While the modification methods have become more advanced over the years, the motivation and pleasure behind the activity of speed racing remains the same. The mass appeal has survived as well, as street racing makes appearances in movies and music today.
