Don't know if this is a record, or not. Last night 30MM Jr had a mission (KC-135E) taking off around 1800. Right after rotation it hit a flock of starlings. The pilot kept the power on, made a single turn around the pattern and brought her back down. He said they counted the remains and splats of at least 40 birds. One whole carcass was stuck in the port truck, 3 engines ingested (at least two will have to be dropped), and there were even feathers in the pitot tube and A/C intake. Said it looked like a loser in a paintball fight. Will try to get pix from him.

Glad Jr., et al, made it back safe and sound. I despise, hate, and loath starlings, would LOVE to introduce some pathogen to exterminate them from the North American continent, something slow and agonizing so I could enjoy watching them flop around and squawk.

Roger that. The funny thing is that on the Active Duty side (Scott AFB) they were having some kind of "Bird Strike" Symposium. A Guard light Col took a beating from an Active Duty officer on how wonderful the Scott anti-bird program was and the big $$ they'd spent on it. When the Col heard of the situation he RAN over to the Guard side and was in 7th heaven taking pix and collecting samples in baggies for today's sessions. Ah, the power of digital cameras and PowerPoint! Oh, and today for lunch?...Fried chicken!

30MM,

If you get that picture, please post - I hate the little mother f***ers. Seeing 40 of them buy the farm in one hit will make my day.

Horrido,

You'd appreciate what happened in the back yard a while back.
I blow these things away with my PCP .177 all the time.
I bagged one, it fluttered away injured (bad shooting I know) but before I could follow up, a rook swooped down, picked it up, carried into a tree and ate it whilst it was still alive...

Since I'm not sure of the legality of whacking starlings in rural areas (since they are classified a noxious invasive alien species with extermination programs against them, here), I'll just say many a starling has mysteriously succumbed in close proximity. Did I also mention I'm the proud owner of a Weihrauch .177 match air rifle?

Mass-killings of starlings is a true joy, and they're here because some British jack-ass thought that the New World should have all the birds mentioned in Shakespeare's plays.

Good'un for the rook, hope he didn't get poisoned on the pellet. Wish more things ate starlings, here. Can't seem to get anything to touch'em, they're so filthy and disgusting.

IIRC Horrido, I think the Starlings were brought over under the guise of getting rid of the english sparrows that found their way here. Too bad they weren't African Swallows...at least they have a purpose.

quote:
Although there are approximately 200 million starlings in North America, they are all descendants of approximately 60 birds foolishly released in Central Park, New York, by Eugene Schieffelin, who headed an acclimatization society trying to introduce to North America every bird species mentioned in the works of William Shakespeare.

Man, if only I could go back in time.

quote:
These birds pose enough of a threat to songbirds that it is legal to kill Starlings at any time in the U.S. and Canada. It is also a common grassroots practice where possible to set up nest boxes in backyards and wooded areas for the native species to give them a chance, and to destroy Starling nests.

And on that last note, I've killed perhaps hundreds of the little buggers. When they're fledging, it's a highly satisfying and self-motivating day, where I can go to sleep happy I've toasted next year's breading stock by dropping this year's brood. I love lining up on the squawkers, cutting them in half with my front sight, gently squeezing the trigger, and ..."WAAAHH! WAAAH! WAAAH!" as they flutter, flop and hit the ground twitching.

Horrido,

I enjoy blowing the little suckers away myself - but you're starting to reach the foaming at the mouth stage ...

My weapon of choice is my Air Arms S200 PCP .177

No recoil and with the two stage suppressor all they hear is a pht and it's lights out.
