Ok ,some of you "Old Dawg's" can remember back when the AIRFORCE would brag
"We dont need Recruiting Ad's on TV,We get all we want without it."

Which was Basically TRUE.I never saw a USAF Recruiting Ad on TV until
after I got out and then it was 98.
Now after what Fender told us on another thread the USAF has to trim 45,000 troops out, wont take prior service etc... then
"Why do you see USAF Recruiting Ad's on TV?"

Why would you need too, if your kicking out "Trained Troops" who want to stay,I'm not counting the "Un Wanted" in the ranks that need to be "Let Go" but the Folks who are "Good Troops," just to enlist
Off the Street?

It never made any sense to me.

Goose, I agree, it's never made sense to me either. However they still need new recruits to replace those who will retire, get out ect. If they didn't they would end up with nothing but those in the mid level career (SSgt & TSgt). Could you imagine trying to get promoted with that many testing?

I remember the "AIM HIGH US AIR FORCE" ad campaign commercials pretty clearly, and i think they predate my own military service.

C'mon guys, We are sooo overmanned. We <i>have to</i> trim all the excess fat. I mean, hell. There were 6 Crew Chiefs (counting me) on swing shift Friday night. </sarcasm>

Jack, we must of BEEN WAY WAY OVER MANNED THEN!

On the Hog we had 2 CC's per jet,DCC and ACC, you took care of your OWN JET, One on Days the other on Nights.
You could ask your ACC what was "Going on?" he could tell you exactly. If he missed signing something off, you trusted them without question and signed it off after taking a quick peek,Kept your Jet
Clean, did extra maintance to keep it in TIP TOP shape.
Never worried that the Jet wouldnt be ready and BPO/PRE if it came down more than 2 hours before shift change in return He knew that in the morning he could just walk out and She'd be ready TP signed-off everything serviced (I had swings as Asst Flt Chief) for awhile.
Then you had a couple of "Floaters" to help tow, maintance, cover for TDY's or Leave.
34 CrewChiefs pre flight of 14 jets.

Trash Haulers 4 CC's per jet assigned and another 15 for Enroute.
50 per shift including CC's, Specialist's and we were still
"HUMPING!"

The idea of promotions, in 86 they promoted over 20,000 E-4's to E-5 because the Line numbers had been so Low over the years.
It took 18 months for some to sew on Staff they promoted so many to make-up the gap.It took me 6 months to put mine on and I had a 9,000 line number with the rest of the "3 + years in grade group."

I'm sorry, you have to have enough to take care of each jet,and "Jack of all trades" doesnt take the place of it either.

I dont know how you guys do it
But I tip my hat to you!

Goose
