You know we (some of us) have the perfect tool to get our ideas to Dur in the form of LOMAC. Below are a few shots showing how easy it would be to make the painting non-unit specific and still show the power of the A-10. It may rule-out Pope just by the nature of their nose art but they have Dru's first painting. I know this one shows Spang's engine art but this is just the base which comes in the "quick mission" in LOMAC!

No offense, Dice, but too vanilla.

Those front quartering shots are similar to Mr. Blairs' 'Thunderstruck' (my login name has nothing to do with the painting, by the way :-) and it would be cool to see some stuff blowing up. The only way that would be possible is if the A-10 was flying directly over the target (again, similar to Mr. Blair's original A-10 piece - very cool, but look close and #2 is probably not going to make the corner!). I'm sure it happened in OIF now and then, but you and I know that is a big no-no from the tactics standpoint.

The view looking out the front of the cockpit is way too cluttered, even if you do something along the lines of a viewing point from over the pilot's shoulder and a telescopic effect so you're looking only through the HUD field of view. Heck, even then to be accurate the viewer probably wouldn't be seeing any of the HUD data displayed...your noggin' has to be right where the pilot's is to see that data. Any other position and you might catch a little of what's being displayed on one side of the HUD or the other.

Speaking of which, any word on whether the A-10 is going to get a new HUD for Suite III/PE Dice? I know they had talked about upgrading the computer that generates the data projection, but it would be sweet if they replaced franken-HUD with one that is a lot closer to the pilot. That would allow more pilots to sit where they want and still see the data.

By the way, nice screenshots from LOMAC! Maybe I'll catch up with you at Hawgsmoke.

An A-10 rolling inverted onto an armored column for a dive attack could be cool.

"When you're wounded and left on Afghanistan's plains,
And the women come out to cut up what remains,
Jest roll to your rifle and blow out your brains
An' go to your Gawd like a soldier."

Even better idea....an A-10 bearing down on a column from the perspective of a T-72 T.C.(that's the tank commander).

"When you're wounded and left on Afghanistan's plains,
And the women come out to cut up what remains,
Jest roll to your rifle and blow out your brains
An' go to your Gawd like a soldier."

Don't take these screenshots to be exactly What I would want the painting to look like but just something to get the guys with (and without) LOMAC thinking. If I get time today I will work with the sim and see about getting some with more action.

Thunderstruck, I may not make Hawgsmoke and should know for sure tomorrow or the next day! If you get a new HUD it will not change postion but be a upgraded version of the one in the aircraft today.

Well, I was looking forward to meeting one of the most important and knowledgeable individuals in the A-10 program! Let me know here on WT if you're gonna make it or not.

Now why can't we move the HUD closer? The F/A-18 has a great set up...HUD almost directly on top of the upfront controller. They can see more data with their mellons out of direct alignment with the HUD. Only makes sense.

Speaking of up-front controllers, Uncle Dice, PLEASE tell me we're getting one. I am sick and tired of putting my left thumb on the harness lock lever, then reaching 4.5 inches to the 10 o'clock position to feel the UHF preset channel change button so I can change the channel without looking. It's a huge pain to do with harness and bulky survival vest on.

For cryin' out loud, the AT-38C has a nicer, more ergonomic cockpit than us! DON'T even get me started on the various locations where external light switches are in the Hawg. I have to do a 30 minute review of the -1 if I haven't flown nights in a while. That time should be dedicated to last-minute clean stuff, night tactics review, and NVG preflight.

I step off of my soapbox now.

Dice, is there a POC I can get in touch with to argue my case as a lowly Hog driver who doesn't decide how or how much money is spent on the jet? If Oswego is where the mock-up is, I am within driving distance, and would love to take a look at it. If you want me to contact you directlt, I'd be happy to...let me know.

Proper Prior Planning Prevents Piss-Poor Performance. Would love to see what the 150 lb. brains think we need.

Thunderstruck, ROFL yes you do get an upfront controler with the PE mod. If you would like an unclassifided brief on everything included in PE contact at my .mil addy (from your .mil addy) and I will get it out to you. I will send you an email with my military addy (to your email listed in your profile) as soon as I log-off here.

We "can't" move the HUD closer because that would requied a total redesign of the HUD and the main inst. panel....not enough money for that!

We do have some pilots going to Owego (soon) to "fly" the SIL at LM so they can see the system and give their inputs on how things work...MIGHT be able get you in on that or at the very least you could "look over the shoulder" as they run the SIL.

BTW thanks for the "....most important and knowledgeable individuals in the A-10 program!" comment!

One of the nice features in the Viper is that we can go through VHF/UHF changes with the throttle quadrant and the selections repeat on the Hud. the same goes for nav and Tacan. But again we also have the DED and ICP up front in eyes level view.

This would be a good implementation to the A10, Upgradeing the switchology to the Stick and Throttle. It really is beneficial and keeps your head out of the feedbag.

Having to "extend" off the target area to work heads down takes you out of the Fight. This is not good in todays threat enviroment.

Pulling G's low level and reaching for switches to adjust your "Engagement plan" is very taxing and inefficient.

Although there are many other parts to be included, one of the upgrades will be a Viper stick and Mudhen throttles!
