Just letting you know I've got this DVD on order - should arrive sometime next week.

Will get back to you and let you know if its any good.
(some of you out there may already have it and have some opinions on how good a job Discovery did on the A10)

For example, I bought a DVD on the SR-71 Blackbird just yesterday(from Discovery's same Great Planes series) and while it was a good documentary, the footage was not overly impressive...very dated!

(I've got an old VHS video camera and have easily achieved much better quality footage at Airshows. Go to http://www.wvi.com/~lelandh/sr-71~1.htm for the 'last flight' of the Blackbird back in 1990 for a much better quality video (108mb!). You see the crew board the plane, engines start up, the taxi, although you don't see much of the takeoff -as it took place when it was dark at 5am-, it still sounds UNREAL!...no music and very little commentary to ruin the video unlike the Discovery series)

Talk to all very soon.

Thanks for the interesting Blackbird links, it is an amazing aircraft! They have one on static display at the Lackland AFB parade ground, I used to stop by and just walk around it on occassion just to marvel at such a beautiful machine.

Where did you find the A-10 Great Planes video? Is it only in Australia? I'd love to get a copy, but I am not sure if they format will work in the US, or even over here in Belgium where I am currently stationed.

Cheers! M2

They only retired the blackbird (which is actually back in service) because they have something that can kick the blackbird's tail all the way back to base. They deny and deny it, but they do that to all top-secret things untill they decide we should know about it, which is just about the time something better is about to secretly replace it.
Remember, the blackbird was built in the 60's, and at the time the speed-limiting factor was the skin material. Think of all the skin material development that has taken place since then, and how advanced today's skins are. You wouldn't believe the speeds they are hitting today, remember, the SR71 is mach3plus...... but plus WHAT? Saying 3plus is as vague as you can get to skirt the truth. And now they even have better engines on its replacement.

Hey everyone,

As promised, I said I'd let you know if the DVD was any good - well, I'm very pleased to report that it was quite a improvement on the SR71 DVD.

Quite a bit of time spent talking to Pilots and about the GAU-8A, maybe a little too much time spent on the history of the Hog planes going all the way back to the Jugs of WW2.

(everytime, they showed footage of the A10 opening up with the Avenger - volume turned up loud of course!<img src=icon_smile_wink.gif border=0 align=middle> - I laughed myself silly<img src=icon_smile_big.gif border=0 align=middle> )

Overall, I'd give this DVD an 7.5/10 (the Blackbird DVD I rate 6/10)

Recommended!<img src=icon_smile.gif border=0 align=middle>

p.s

I would have marked the DVD higher if there had being more of the gun firing and its development + a camera on board an A10 during low level flying would have being brilliant!

well I emailed that other link of TLC and they aren't going to release this on DVD or VHS so it looks like I'll just have to tape it.

Dice, I wonder if this is the same one of Modern Marvels?

NJ, who are some of the people they interviewed? The did the same thing on this other Hog show. Going back to all the other "Thunderbolts". I remember them showing the P-47 first, but then went through the F-86,100,105 and then on to the A-10.

I taped this other show so I can go back and see who they interviewed to see if it's the same show.

I'm curious, can you watch a PAL formatted DVD on a computer?

I am thinking of ordering this, as I can watch it on my multi-system DVD.

Cheers! M2

(To TopGun)

Yep, sounds like the same show.

-It was produced in 1997, and runs for 48 minutes
-they talk to 4 pilots, 2 guardsmen (one full-time, the other is a part-time policeman) and a 1 crew chief (who focuses on the Avenger, its 30mm round and how the gun dominates everything forward of the wings)

The main pilot they speak to is Lt Col. Ron Henry. Apparently he's the only A10 pilot with over 4,000 hrs of flight time who flys -or flew???- (afterall this production is now 7 years old, he has probably retired by now) with the National Guard's 175th Maryland Wing - he volunteered for the Warthog back in '77)
