This was in press today...

quote:
Afghan President Hamid Karzai applauds during the flyover of the 111th Fighter Wing of Willow Grove Air Force Base, after being awarded the Philadelphia Liberty Medal at a ceremony at Independence Hall in Philadelphia, Sunday, July 4, 2004. The medal's $100,000 prize will go to support Afghan children who have been orphaned in the recent conflicts, Karzai said. I cover OEF/ISAF for the SACEUR, so I watch Karzai's movements (sts) pretty close. I would have thought if he wanted to see A-10s in action he would have just gone to the eastern provinces of his own country...they are getting a lot of action there! (sts). Here is a nice pic of a Willow Grove A-10 for him...

Yeah, it's only a 30 minute drive (at breakneck speeds!) from the palace in Kabul to Bagram. He could even give one a kiss on the nose in appreciation!

Ohh!! I did the Thanksgiving & Christmas 2003, and New Years 2004 in Bagram. I sure am gonna miss those deployments....!

Majormadmax: Thats an extremely old pic of "The Bag"! That was around my first trip there in 2002. It's a little more like LOLA at Nellis now. Big old revetments.

30mm: Or a 5 min Chinook ride!

Weasel- It was exactly a year ago today I started my journey to Afdustistan. giving serious thought to spending summer '05 there. I managed to avoid the chinooks- got a 1 hour tour of the area and Kabul in a Blackhawk, though!

Max- Took some pretty hard looks myself...didn't hurt a bit!

I hope she does, yojimbo! There was precious little else to look at over there. She was (is) Visine for the soul!
