"was there ever an attempt/thought of mounting this gun on a ground vehicle, say a ligh tank, ifv, combat support vehicle, recon vehicle, or scout....?

With a range of 3/4 of a mile + (from FAS), it would seem like a very effective weapon on a lighter platform, for both an air defense and ground role (simialr to the soviet ZSU) mainly for short or medium range engagements and self defense.

I know the entire gun system is large, but is it to large?

High rate of fire, accurate, and devasting to just about anything it hits it would seem perfect.

Or am i just way off base here and outa whack......? "

It got me curious as to the responses down playing the effectivness of the GAU-8 (the A-10's gun, if i have the model correct.

What do you guys think?

Recoil would make it almost impossible for anything less than a MBT.

Put one of these on a LAV and it'd roll the first time you shoot it from the side. The system is also a little big to house in a turret or in a LAV.

The point behind the LAV is mostly to protect the troops inside during transit to the fight.

Just my 2cents worth.

Like Ice Pirate explains, I think any vehicle will roll over when the GAU-8 fires. Besides the large gun, the ammunition supply needs room too in such a vehicle. The whole combination might need an 18 wheeler which is not really a tactical system. <img src=newicons/Whatever_anim.gif border=0 align=middle>

Major difference having one on a ship as compared to trying to mount one on a moving vehicle.
