I took this picture when I was at England AFB in January of 1987 while wirking a Class A mishap on 79-0212. Didn't get a tail number on this jet. Sorry.

Was a config like that (sta 2, 5, 7 and 10 not on the jet) common back then? It's a shame digital camera didn't exist 10 years earlier.

That was the standard configuration back in the days of low altitude Mavericks and guns Fulda Gap WWIII. A full gun, two mavericks, an ECM pod and maybe a couple of Mk-20 Rockeye.

Why only two Mavs if every tank in the world is expected to be out there (as opposed to mounting the three-rail and loading at least two on each or even going for an emergency three and accept the wheel sponson/flap damage)? Are those the only two stations capable of loading them?

Crushed under his own mental block...

You aint kidding. I'd have all kinds of awesome pix from my time in the Infantry. The old Kodak Disc i had did not hold up to the rigors of field life very well.

At all.

One reason the pylons were downloaded was to enhance performance and range at low altitude. If we put LAU-88s (3-rail launchers) on, that would increase fuel consumption and drag way beyond what taking the racks off saved. Carrying two LAU-88s decreases our top speed by about 10% and increases our fuel consumption by about 20% at low altitude.

The other reason was we didn't figure we would use free-fall weapons in Europe, so we didn't need a bunch of empty pylons.

The whole bit about paint damage and the LAU-88 is a peacetime, TAC, wash the jets every 90 dys, got to make sure they look good off station BS. Whats a little paint damage compared to a dead tank?

Thats a Black tail on the last role, Jump in Hogsnort but one of the
80-0 Block jets. You can also tell by the Engine covers each Squadron had their own Color.

The LAU-88's if you used the inside rail would "FRAG IT BAD" back in those days but since we "Only shot Live AGM-65's at Nellis or NTC" we just carried the LAU-117's.

Notice that the AIM-9 mode wasnt done yet. Plus notice the CH-53 in the back ground, they were doing SAR training out on the Nation Forest.

That was a BAD crash! ,If I'm right thats where Capt Johnson died,One of the Hud flims of a A-10 hitting the Trees is 212'S HUD Flim. .
Capt Johnson had a MID-AIR in 85 at Nellis and Punched-out.
He didnt punch out in time in 79-9212 It was one of Our AFLT jets in RED.
We took his Jet to FT Rucker on our next TDY with his name on it so his family could see it.

It was a rough one, his Funeral was packed in the Chapel plus they did the Missing man.It took RED a while to get back on track after his loss

Goose,

If they were still parked in same manner as when I left in Jan 86.....that should probably be 80-0151 or 80-0152?

Looks like last row near the trim pads. Last spot or next to it.

I'll deffer to you on that one Coach, "Jolly Green" is what we just called them.

That should be the row that faces east and a role behind it
That should be the row too that is almost Straight across from the ECP and 80-0175 the Squadron Bird was the first one.

I wish we had Digital then.

Goose,

You're right, it was a BAD crash. It was in the National Forest and he came down through the trees. It was my first investigation and I can't remember seeing another that bad. He took out several trees and the ground was so wet that we couldn't get the engine parts out. Got a bulldozer stuck in the mud to the top of the tracks and, for all I know, it's still stuck there. Tried putting chains from the scoop to some trees and busted the chains. Had to get some of the troops from the engine shop to lug equipment several hundred yards into the forest to disassemble the engines where they were. I have 35mm pics from the crash site I can scan if anyone is interested.

Yeah Goose.....

80-0175 was 1st bird to your right when entering the ECP from the AMU. I'm still pretty sure thats a shot of 80-0151 or 80-0152.

You're working on what the tail number is from where it's parked?<img src=newicons/tard.gif border=0 align=middle>

Ignorance may be bliss, but it sure ain't fun!

What a sad story sgtgoose1 and engineguy <img src=newicons/smiley_salute.gif border=0 align=middle>

About the colors, I like the green color, it looks more agressive than the white/grey colors now. Low above the trees, looking for tanks in his green camouflage and than see, hit, kill and gone before the enemy saw him coming.

And that year 1987 was the first year that I saw the Warthog shooting on the range in my country and get intrested in that plane and other planes.

Yes, it may not be an exact science......but it could work!<img src=newicons/anim_lol.gif border=0 align=middle>

IF.....and thats a BIG word.........IF the acft are where they are normally parked, we should be able to tell!

Found a picture of me sitting in 79-0141, an 81st bird, in 81 or 82 while it was in Aviano. Havent a clue where my scanner is. Atempted to take a digital of it, but that stinks!
Maybe I'll find and dig out the scanner!
