It's been a while since I've hot pitted a Hawg, but I was taking an Air Force CBT for Enviromental Management. Low and behold there is a pic of someone pitting a Hawg with the gear pins still in W-79. Aren't they supposed to be in during Hot Pits?

I can look at the -12 tonight, but I think that is normally in the local CL at each base. Can't remember how we did it @ Spang.

Cool. I can't link the pic since I'm at work (I can't even bypass the filters and I'm Comm!!). So I'll get it up when I get home.

could you show us the photo? Is is possible that the pins were munition pins not gear pins. Yes it was in the CL to pin the gear, even during WW Gulf I we pined the gear during hot pits/

I looked at the pic again, even zoomed in on it, they are gear pins (the slat pin is quite visable. If someone wants to host the pic for me, I'll be stuck here at work for another 3 hours and can't access photobucket or similar websites. you can shoot me a PM with your E-mail and I'll send it to you.

Been some time since I hot pitted but I seem to remember that while at Moody, the pins where installed by the weapons troops during the cursory checks when they verified all switches where off safe and/or norm.

Weasel, email me the picture and I'll post it for you...

I was a PAD super plus HOT PIT QA aggiee and the gear pins did have to be installed and ALL weapons had to be pinned.
Now according to the -12 you werent supposed to have \"Flares or Rockets\" loaded, but that fell out during GW1 but they were Weapons checked.

Jet has to be Pinned for Hot pitting, but thats by the Book.
We did it during GW1 on our end too pinned the Gear.

I know at Osan (back in 97-98 anyways) we pinned the gear before they rolled into the pits, once done we pulled them and off she went....

yeap, just from the location of the pins, I'd say they where gear pins.

I forgot to check the JG tonight, but thinking back, we always pined ours at cursory, and the B-man pulled them prior to pulling chocks on the way back to arming.

Could be MAU 40/50 pins, can't get a good enough closeup without pixel distortion. We kept them in the pod that way there was a set available whenever we reloaded bombs. Isn't that a 500 lb hanging on sta 4 with 5,6,7 empty?

I tried to enhance and enlarge the photo in paint shop pro, but just as boodah the pixels are too blury even after enhancement. I am not sure if they are extra weapons pins or gear pins. I used to put the gear pins on the left side and the weapons pins on the right so they would not get confused, and i believe that was common practice back then.

You guys dont have \"Gear pin bags\" anymore? The only pin we kept stashed rolled up like that was the Gun Pin and weapons pins were rolled-up and palaced in the pod door to keep them straight.
That way when you dropped the pod, weapons could just grab their pins, and the CrewChiefs at EOR would grab the gear pins and the #1 would pin the nose and gun before hooking up the Comm cord.

One word of caution too, Always before you start pitting, even if your not the PAD super just the #1 man on the pit, talk to your #2 and the POL guy and make sure
1. The POL troop has the magnet tied to his arm at all TIMES.
2. Your #2 knows that if you yell or signal to pull chocks to do it ASAP while doing a refuel or if he see's something and signals to STOP you disconnect and GET THE JET OFF THE PAD!
3. That you check to see if the AFTO form is signed for the inspection of the panagraph (refuel equipment)

This is one of those jobs I always liked to know who was on the PAD we usually had the same team always on the PAD together.

I'm saying that is in 88 I was on PIT#1 and \"Paul \"Rocky\" was PAD super
had a new guy on from POL and told him to make sure he kept his \"MAGNET on his wrist and double check the equipment..

BLUE the week before had a \"Fuel leak\" in one of the units, not big but enough to shut down the pits..

We started Hot-pitting everything went good for the first hour,we were hitting both BLUE and RED jets then about the 6th jet across the PAD Smitty and 1 had just finished the Fuel checks I had confirmed fuel flow with the pilot and \"ALL HELL BROKE LOOSE\"!!!!!!!!!!!
The hose connecting the unit to the panagraph BURST! at the seal and JP-4 was going everywhere!
I had just looked over when it happened, gave Smitty the PULL CHOCKS SIGNAL he was already doing so,I unhooked the the nozzle and told the pilot to \"GET THE FUCK OUT OF THERE!, and yanked the Comm cord!
Half the Comm cord was still connected the ladder was still down when he \"HIT THE GAS\".

\"Rocky didnt even wait SEEN IT signaled the other pit to \"BREAK-OFF\" but they had seen it too already.

We got the jets cleared and the crews were in full EVAC mode, but so was our POL guy he took off with them while JP-4 WAS STILL PUMPING.
Good thing his super was there because he had taken his string off during the refuel and left the magnet on. The 3 of us the POL super , Smitty and Myself tried to reach in the pit to get the magnet off and Smitty finally got the string and yanked it off. Those pits aint that swallow .

By that time JP-4 had covered both pits, running towards PHASE DOCK and BLUE AMU and starting to cross the road.
\"Rocky\" had Declared a GROUND EMERGENCY and then this \"F-ING SP starts to drive his truck INTO THE AREA! Rocky tells him to \"GET THE F-OUT NOW YOU &%$%$%^$%##@@!

The fire Dept came and before we could get out they foamed the WHOLE area with us in it, and we were SOAKED in JP-4 and FOAM so we hit the wash rack across from the pit's and hosed-off, We had FUEL BURNs in places I never had before! they took us to the hospital and gave us scrubs to wear after washing us some more and applying cream.

We all got a 3day pass from the DCM and a Saftey award for stopping the fuel and for the actions taken getting the Jets off the Pits. The new POL troop didnt fair as well and got his ass handed to him.

Then POL did full inspections of all the equipment and found every unit had cracks in the seals around the couplings and 3 bad hoses that someone had wrapped in \"F-4 tape.\"

I have to credit that if it wasnt the same team working the pits together on that day except that \"New POL\" guy in training who was there but his Supervisor who normally was my pit operator it might of been differant.

So if you can always try and at least get the same 2 on each pit that work together for a safety stand point.
We did that thru out the War too always the same group.

That was \"FING SCARY \"and Smitty and I got off pit duty for about 3 months then I became a PAD super and right away a QA Aug.

Just CYA

Our weapons guys always bundled the streamers and wrapped them around W-79's holes. We put our gear pins next to the fuel panel. I looked at it zoomed and the pin on top looks longer than the others, that's why I figured it was the slat pin.

This is how I've always done/seen done pins:
Slat and gear pins - wrapped together and tucked under the fuel SPR
Battery pin (if not secured in battery pin panel) - tucked on right side of fuel mngmt pnl
Gun pin - tied around center of W-79
Weapons pins - tied in bundles and stowed in W-79
