Last night I read a very interesting article on the Air Force web site. It entailed our sister unit, the 74th Wing of PopeAFB, and how they’re being recognized by the DoD and the Secretary of Defense, for their “outstanding” maintenance personal and ratings during Operation Anaconda. And I was chatting with a friend of mine, a crew chief down in the south country, and he then informed me that they are also up for a citation for this war as well. And this got me to thinking.
Why in the hell, do we never get noticed outside of our unit. You open up the Citizen Airmen ( a reservist publication ) and maybe, just maybe, you’ll see a blurb or two about the A-10’s from WhitemanAFB. That’s if they bother to even mention the 442nd Fighter Wing at all. You look at the Air Force publicity pictures of this War that we are in, and you’ll find PopeAFB’s tiger marking covering just about everything that has to do with A-10s. Go ahead and try to spot an arrow head!
Then, after a short night of ranting to my collogues about this, I went on my way. Getting my cup of coffee, giving my counterpart his turn over, I received a ride back to the Orderly Room. And our beloved Captain and I were talking about that particular subject. He kind of just shrugged and said, “That’s active duty for yah!” However he did mention that he’d like to see “some sort of distinctive nose art” for our beloved hawgs. Something that wouldn’t follow the other guys but showed us off a little bit. Then it clicked. We do have something distinctive. Our tail feathers. The Arrow Head! It says it all!
When the ancients used to fight battles, they never praised the arrow that killed the enemy, it was the military that received the honors. They never broke down the pieces and parts, and complimented each and every set. No. The battle was won, by the unit as a whole. We are that arrow head, the Air Force, the arrow. We are the very thing that penetrates our enemies and the first and last thing they see before their demise. We are their fear.
But we are humble. We are the one unit, so good at our jobs, that we can afford to be. We don’t need tusks or tigers teeth. We no longer allow the term Reservist or Guardsmen to mean an “augment” to active duty, but their compliment. Every unit that has A-10’s, know without skipping a beat, who the best are. Ask them and they’ll tell you. They’re the best!. But ask them who they want to go into battle with, and you’ll hear our phones ring. And we always answer.
We’ve done it all. Bagram, Turkey, Kuwait, Tallil, and even Kirkuk. All in a short amount of time. We’ve been the pivotal team that allowed success to occur in each operation, and in each campaign. Maintaining a 100% FMC rating, which is unheard of in an AOR. The first unit ever, in the Air Force to accomplish this. We aided and provided support for the capture or kill of key former Iraqi and Taliban leaders. We see troops from the 101st and 173rd wearing our arrow head, placing it on their trucks, and equipment, like a trophy of pride and thanks. You hear of Marines talking of how this “Big Ass A-10 with a yellow arrow head” came out of no where and scared the living hell out of the enemy. Making them run and hide. You see teams of security forces and services lined up to be, even just a part of our mission. Apart of our goals. Asking for a coin or even just a picture that shows our arrow head, so they can prove they knew us. And never will you hear us ask to be recognized. They all know it. As we do to. No award could be better than the look in their eyes. The stories they tell. That’s what we do, that’s who we are.
We come from an area proud of our heritage, and proud of our land. We are a people who speak with our actions, not just our words. We stand firm in all our beliefs, and open our hearts to all who need it. We’re from the open plains, the rolling hills, and the land of beautiful lakes and rivers. And after a long hard day , we can stand tall in the sunset, never saying a word, and everyone knows, we are the best. And we’ll walk quietly back into the shadows, and back to our families, with pride in our hearts, and relief in our breath. Knowing that when ever and where ever, we are needed, we’ll answer the call again.
But know this to be true. When ever all hell breaks loose again! Forever look for the Arrow Head above. For we are the KC Hawgs.

I'm confused...are you complaining about not being recognized for your efforts, or not being recognizable, or that another unit is being recognized, or that they are recognizable? We are all on the same team, all Hog Drivers, or Hog Loaders, or Hog Fixers...the cross we bear is that we are the name that shall not be spoken by "Big Blue", no matter how important or critical our contributions were to the overall effort. Welcome to our world. At least in the Guard and Reserves (in your case), you don't have to wonder if the AF will mandate the closure of your unit in the next six months to pay a few bills, leaving you and all your colleagues to scramble for whatever desirable assignments are left over. Or that you live from year to year (12, at last count) with no support or funding, inadaquate facilities, and an uncertain future because "you will be going away". The 74th Fighter Squadron, The World Famous Flying Tigers, did an astounding job last year moving into Bagram from Kuwait, no one can dispute that. And for their efforts, they deserve to be recognized.

Hey MeSo I am with you dude. When we got back from Base "Y" I was all gloating and happy about being the very first unit to even get "the pod" and all that stuff. Dont believe me go back and look at my first post. Man did I have it all wrong. Yeah the 104th was the first with the pod and we did this and we did that and noone has ever put us in for a great big award that we could put with the rest of the fruit salad on my chest. I am a technician too and I know that full time Guard thing runs deep for us especially when it comes to the way we think active duty looks down on us. But I did some figuring after Santa Goose and the other members here at the WT flamed me for a day. We, Massachusetts, Connecticut, and Missouri were the spearhead on this whole Litening II Pod gig that we had going in OIF. Dude that rocks ! But I look at it like this, the A10 community as a whole is looked down at by the Air Force. I would rather have a freindly fued between active duty and guard / reserve A10's than I would give it up and be part of the lawn dart community. There isnt any commeraderie in any aircraft type bar none like the Hawg community. All the A10's rocked the Iraqi world. Spec Ops guys were calling F16's off targets and requesting specifically A10's. I think collectively we all rock.
SOMEBODY GIMME A HARRUMP !

By this time tomorrow I shall have gained either a pearage or Westminster Abbey........Nelson

Personally, i always shied away from praise.

The people that are praising you one minute will roast your ass the minute you do something wrong. The media builds you up, just so it can tear you down later.

Know that you and your colleagues are the best, and be the quintessential "Quiet professional".

Well,
That was definitely the responses and thoughts that I was trying raise out of the A-10 community. The whole point was to give other (pointy heads, or otherwise), a better understanding of what HAWGs do. What’s on our minds, what makes us tick. To sum it all up. The fact that we ARE THE BEST. All A-10s. Because of our plane and the people who fly and maintain them. We live in the shadows of bureaucratic redirect. One of our pilots said it best………They hate us during peace time, but love us in war. And I think we wouldn’t have it any other way. That’s how we work best.

It’s the “teeth”, the whole damn world thinks every A-10 has teeth painted on the nose. I’ve been in five different A-10 FS and none of them got half the coverage as the Tiger Toothed *&$#*@s anyway. Just my humble opinion, but if all the other squadrons had been allowed to keep their nose art after Desert Storm then they too would be better recognized by the public. I’m not downing the 74th nor their heritage, I personally love the Flying Tigers of WWII and respect what they’ve done since. But come on they do have an unfair advantage with USAF sanctioned distinctive Artwork on their jets; that the other squadrons lack. JKA

FINE ,ITS THE TEETH THAT GOT THE 74TH SOME AWARDS,

JUST LIKE THE TEETH GOT US IN THE 76TFS TO BE THE "TEST DUMMIES" FOR CORONET WARRIOR 3.

AND YOU KNOW WE WERE PICKED? BECAUSE WE HAD THE ROOM AND COULD PLAY DEPLOYMENT. HAD NOTHING TO DO WITH THE TEETH.

DESERT STORM,I WOULD INVITE ANYONE TO LOOK AT THE BOOKS WROTE ON IT AND JUST SEE HOW MANY TIMES A-10'S ARE FLYING WITH THE TEETH PICTURED.
I BET IT AINT ABOVE 15% AND I KNOW BECAUSE I'VE GOT EVERYONE I CAN FIND WITH THE HOG.
MOST ARE OF THE BEACHBOYS,MURTLE BEACH AND THE RESERVE UNITS. AND THEN FIND THE TEETH ON A HOG AND MOST ARE OF THE ONE 75TH JET AND THE REST 74TH TAILS.
BUT THEN AGAIN,FISH AND KARL WE'RE 76TH PILOTS WHO SET THE ALL TIME TANK KILLS IN ONE DAY RECORD,BUT THEN AGAIN IT WAS PROBABLY THE TEETH.

I'LL GO DOWN ON RECORD HERE,

YES THEY HAVE TEETH,BUT IS ANYONE GOING TO SAY THEY DONT DESERVE IT?

ARE THEY ALSO THE ONLY UNIT THAT HAS BEEN GIVEN A AWARD FOR THIS OR ANY OTHER WAR LATELY?

LIKE I SAID BEFORE,LOOK AT SSTRUCK'S POST

THATS ALL THE AWARD YOU'LL EVER NEED

You know I'm always happy to promote a unit, any unit Active, Guard, or Reserve if asked to do so and provided infomation and pictures.
That was one reason for building the Hog Pen a place where all members of the Hog community are welcome! Take a look at the main page of my site today, an 80th Anniversary Hog being painted at the 103ed...

http://www.warthogpen.com

I only have one strong supporter at the moment and that is the 103rd out of Bradley CT. Hawg166 has been supplying me with stuff and that units payback will come in the form of their unit aircraft will be featured in the up-coming PC based A-10 sim called, Lock-on Modern Air Combat due out soon. TinyGiant has also support me and the Hog Pen and I will feature his unit in the upcoming months.

I guess my point is don't wait around for someone to recognize you but operate in true Hawg fasion and get in their faces and make them see you! I would start with my own bases website and ask why the hell the A-10 is not even metioned on it!

A stat I've never seen,Is how many of guys who are fighting in the mud lives have been saved by the CAS missions that the A-10 flies. If that number is more than one (which I'm sure it is) No other praise is needed. that's the way I look at it.
