Hello,
Just a quick question. What is the black nose on the A-10s starboard undercarriage fairing for? Has this piece of equipment always been there, or is it a recent addition?

If I remember correctly, this is where the ILS antenna is kept. It also makes it extremley easy to see icing, although I don't believe that's the purpose of it as icing is relatively easy to see just about anywhere on the jet.

Thanks for the reply. This question was originally posted by a USAF pilot (non A-10) over on Google Groups rec.mil.aviation. The cutaway drawings of Mike Badrocke always obscure the nose of the mainwheel fairing. This is due to the angle which it is represented. Mike Badrocke has the ILS antenna in the nose fairing above the muzzle and between the RWRs. It looks like an antenna fairing of some sort, but would like to 100% identify it.

TJ,

I can't think of anything that's above the muzzles and between the RWR antennae. Slight higher on the nose are the markings for the AAR ops, but to the best of my knowledge there is not a fairing or door between the RWR antennae on the front of the plane.

The area between the gun and the IFR assembly is a steel nose cone.

I meant that the Mike Badrocke cutaway drawing has the ILS antenna featured inside the A-10s nose cone.

TJ, that drawing is wrong, or should I say an early concept drawing showing where Fairchild Republic planned to put the ILS antenna. After the first few gun tests they figured out the vibs from GAU-8A would cause major problems with the ILS system so they moved it to the Rt. main Gear pod.

There are other mistakes in that drawing if you look close enough! <img src=icon_smile_big.gif border=0 align=middle>

Ugly but well hung!
