Horatio Hog has been the A-10 mascot for the past 25-30 years do you think it may be time for him to retire and allow Horatio JR. to take-over? With the upcoming PE mod and the 30th anniversary of the Hog the A-10 is changing and I think this may be a good time to updated our mascot.

I’m thinking along the lines of Horatio JR. taking over for pops with an updated image. As most of you know I like the buffed-out Horatio done by a member of the 75th FS a few years back. Add to this a current uniform and something to show the updated capabilities of the Hawg like maybe a terminator style pair of glasses (with red glow) or no glasses but a cyborg eye glowing red with “laser” energy.

<img src="http://www.warthogpen.com/bs/netsig.jpg" border=0>

What do you guys/gals think and what would you add to a 2000 Horatio JR. to show the new era Hawg?

Along these lines I looking for “JC” from the Connecticut ANG who has done so many outstanding doors for his squadron like the one below. If anyone knows him, or known anyone else they feel could do this job, and could pass along my eamil addy (included below) it would be much appreciated!

<img src="http://www.warthogpen.com/art_files/doorart51.jpg" border=0>

BTW- I think the 30th Anniversary PMR in Jan might be a good time to launch the new era mascot. I know everyone will not like this idea but, I also think with the added capabilities of the A-10 with PE (and other mods) and by keeping the basic mascot just letting sonny take over for pops would give us a new image and keep the ties to the past with are so important.

THATS A REAL GREAT IDEAL DICE!,OLD HORATIO HAS 30YRS IN SO ITS TIME TO COLLECT HIS RETIREMENT AND LET THE JR TAKE OVER

THAT REMINDS ME OF A OLD CARTOON ABOUT THE "B-29" AND THE NEW JETS TAKING OVER,HIM AND HIS AIRPLANE WIFE HAVE A "JET BABY" AND IN THE END JR MAKES HIS DADDY PROUD ETC.....

THEY DID ONE A TAXI CAB TOO ALONG THE SAME LINE
CORNY BUT DAMN GOOD CARTOONS!

THE SUNGLASES IDEA IS REALLY GOOD TOO,BUT NO DAMN EARRING

Awsome Idea!!

I'll have to second the no ear-ring deal. You know Dice you could involve this into your door art scheme, by having dad hand over the reigns (literally) to Jr. for all the A-10 squadrons. I think that would look cool.

Speaking of, have you gotten a start on that door idea yet?

Dice,
I was just looking at The Hog Pen and I believe the drawing of the original Horatio is in the Squadron/Signal "A-10 in Action" book. I don't have the book in front of me right now, but I do have a scan of the picture and it credits Hank Caruso, 1979 for the drawing. Hank Caruso has a website at http://www.aerocatures.com/ if you want to get in touch with him. I can check tonight and make sure I am quoting the correct book.

plane-mc if you could check on the book (I don't have that one) and get back to me that would be great.

I know of MR. Caruso's work and have enjoyed it for years. In fact the below work is based on one of his drawing...

It would make sence if he was the man to come-up with Horatio I had just never thought of him! I will shoot him an email today and see what I can find out, thanks for the info and link!!

Dice, the guy that does the Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles is Michael Dooney and he has a website with the door arts he has done for the 104th here in Mass at www.Michaeldooney.com As for the guy known as JC I dont know him but I have emailed one of my freinds down the road in Connecticut to try and get the info on him. As soon as get anything I will let you know.
Also there is one at that site that is the door art for 78-630. You dont have it posted yet but it is "Lady Liberty" and I think it is quite well done.
On your page there is a door art posted that is "The Penguin". That was on 78-583 and it was a joke at the time. We came into work one morning and found out the jet was grounded no ifs ands or buts because of a bad repair that had been done a long time ago at depot, or something to that extent. After it sat for quite a while with no hopes of leaving for depot someone, and we dont know who, put a penguin on the door as a poke at the crew chief. The penguin is the bird that doesnt fly. It was quite a hoot at the time.

Dice,
I knew I shouldn't rely on my memory, I was thinking of the wrong book. The picture is in the Detail and Scale Book #19 by Dana Bell. It is on page 50 and is definately copywrited by Hank Caruso in 1979.

HORATIO HOG RETIRING AND PASSING OFF TO "JR" AND "SIS" HOG WITH A CAPTION READING
"NOT A RUNT IN THE LITTER"

OH WELL,ON MAJOR PAIN KILLERS TODAY,I'M FEELING WAY PAST THE NORTH POND<img src=icon_smile_approve.gif border=0 align=middle><img src=icon_smile_approve.gif border=0 align=middle><img src=icon_smile_tongue.gif border=0 align=middle><img src=icon_smile_tongue.gif border=0 align=middle><img src=icon_smile_tongue.gif border=0 align=middle>

Well I struck-out with MR. Dooney because he just doesn't have the time right now. I have a bad feeling on MR. Caruso because there is no contact info for him on his website and I have recived no responce from the site webmaster on my email sent last week. Have not been able to get JC on the phone but will keep trying...this may be another one of my ideas to die and quick death! <img src=icon_smile_dissapprove.gif border=0 align=middle>

I'm thinking of starting a "contest" on my website and the winner of the "draw a Hawg mascot replacement" would recive a copy of my DVD and a SPO coin. <img src=icon_smile_question.gif border=0 align=middle>

Dice can I make a suggestion. Not to long ago I was doing an internship at the New England Air Museum restoring the gun turrets on a B29. The museum needed to get the nose art done as was in the 508th Heavy Bomb Wing back in its Tinian days. Anyhoo they got a guy that does museum nose art and the like if I recall, and although I am probably wrong I think he was from Pennsylvania and had done work on some of the A10'a there at the Grove. But dont loose hope I will call the head of the B29 project and find out who did the mural on the bomber. At the very least he may be able to steer us to someone that does the quality of work that you want and for what you want. The aviation community is pretty small, maybe we can network and figure something out.

By this time tomorrow I shall have gained either a pearage or Westminster Abbey........Nelson

Hawg166 and Yojimbo, thanks a lot guys I would like to see this go "somewhere" and not be still-born!

The A-10's mascot has never been adopted and used like say, the F-4 Phantom's "spook", and a lot of people don't know who our mascot is or his name. Heck I even had to come here to find out how to spell it but, that has more to do with me not being able to spell very well than not knowing who he was!

O'well Yojimbo and I are working on the A-10 SPO's 30th Anniversary coin this week so at least one of my famous (or is that infamous) projects is moving ahead!

Dice,

Seems like I remember seeing an article about our beloved Horatio Hog in the AF Times or one of those other AF periodicals. I'll look around and see if I can find it. Additionally, just to set the record straight, your updated Horatio was created by the spouse of a 75th member. If you would like to know her name email me and I'll pass that on. Who know's she maybe even willing to do some art work for you.

Well I recived a responce from MR. Caruso giving me his contact info and I sent out an email to him outlining by idea/desire. I also included a link to this thread so if you guys seem him here please give him a warm welcome.

I have my fingers crossed that MAYBE Horatio can get "ambush makeover" and we can get a masscot we can all be proud of!

Recived this responce form MR. Caruso today....

This sounds like it going to be interesting! <img src=icon_smile_big.gif border=0 align=middle>

Hawg166, put that one on hold for right now because if I can get MR. Caruso's help that will keep the linage (S?) of Horatio going and will add a lot to our mascot's history.
I do thank you for your help and we may still need him but, I want to give this avenue a shot first.
