I might be a little late in this thread to start this but what the hell. You guys have been discussing CAS platforms with most of the attention on the Hawg and the Harrier. Are we not forgetting the other Air Force CAS asset that would also be perfectly suited to Marine/Navy use. The C-130 Gunship. The amount of firepower it can deliever onto the battlefield is emense to say the least and it has the long loiter time near to equivilent of the A-10. The only downside being the ablity to drop bombs.

jeeze that isnt THAT bad of an idea !(cept the Navy wont take another airframe) Straffing beaches for the leathernecks, anti gunboat patrol, truckhunting, a rack of hellfires for short range SAMs and AAA, fuel and ammo dumps, the mind boggles lol.

"One of the few birds I know of, you have to yank the wings to replace the engine. It takes 4 days or so to replace a Harrier engine."
~True, you do need to pull the wing to replace the engine, and it is not as easy and an F-4 engine change. But to say it take 4 days is ridiculous! I submit you've never watched one being changed. I have and I sure wasn't there for 4 days. 4 hours maybe, but not 4 days.

I was at a CAS exercise up at Fairchild and the one of the harriers did require an engine change and it did take them about four days. Granted, they didn't work like their ship was sinking, but they did have the jet torn apart! Plus, you have the run, ops cks, etc...

Personally, as a former 'end user' i don't give a flying FUCK how long a plane takes to fix, how often they crash, how much they cost to maintain, or how pretty it is.

All i care about is that SOMETHING shows up when i call for help.

I don't care if it's a freakin' Cessna packing a couple mini-guns, it WILL be welcomed(and busy) when it arrives. :)
