Excuse the sportsmans terms dudes, but I recently switched from a Ruger M-77 .270, to a Ruger M-77 .257 (Weatherby, not Roberts)..I love that round so far, the only gripe I ever really had concerning the .270 is I tend to flinch after awhile as I try to anticipate the recoil, as a result my groupings really start to expand. I had a buddy this fall nail a Bull Elk at 450 yards with his .257, and was so impressed that I bought one, though I couldn't afford a Weatherby rifle....

That .257 seems like It would present an excellent happy medium between velocity, and knock down power....excuse my laymans terms, but I have always felt that the .223 was a tad light, despite how flat that round shoots...

I bet your biggest problem is not the Recoil, its fear of getting hit by the scope. You should getthe stock measured for correct Length.

If you practice squeezing the trigger in a slow but steady manner you will reduce the flinching.

The object is to be totally surprised when the hammer drops, preventing the 'anticipation flinch' from occuring.

Good idea on the scope too. Seen some fellas get a nice gash about the eye socket from that.

.257 weatherby is basicly an 'improved' .25-06. Excellent round. Good to about 1200 meters or so with the right combo of weapon, load, and shooter.

I am good for awhile with my .270 but after some extended shooting I find myself leaning into the gun some, but that .257 is a honey, almost no noticeable recoil. Just thought I would pick your guy's gray matter some. I am by no means an expert, but I have always been a firm beliver in the advantages a flat shooting round has to offer.

Chad,

I don't know enough about your type of rifle to know if it is a single shot b/a or mag loader.

I used to suffer from the flinches big time when playing with an HK G3. What the guy teaching me used to do was on the practice range was to load the mag with blanks and the odd live round mixed in.

I know it sounds strange but it worked real well.

BTW for a flat shooting varmint round, ever tried a Remington .17?

Woosh is about right... LOL

I recon the trajectory is a banjo string out to 300yds. I've never owned one, but shot a mates plenty of time mainly at foxes

BTW, shooting your mates is the best way, you're not wearing out your own barrels that way..!

Got a great story about it, but I'll move over to the Firearms forum to tell this tall tale...

Funny how missing a good old ' can change a sentance.

When I said shooting your mates (i.e. killing them) I REALLY meant shooting your mates' (i.e. rifle).

Doh...

.17 rem is the closest thing in the world to a laser weapon.

You fire the round, and it is on target RIGHT NOW.

So different to the good old 300gr FMJ .45 ACP.

I used to shoot at falling plates at 100mtrs (silly I know) and that was a good 18" hold over and then

BANG

Sorry I think I meant 230...

What ever was loaded into the factory Federal .45 ACP FMJs.

It's been a long time, and allas, too much lead vapour has screwed the brain...

I could have sworn I used to have some big loads up to the 300 mark. Perhaps they were for the old .44

230gr. ;)

LOL, but that don't mean someone didn't make 300gr handloads.

I believe there is a 300 gr .451 bullet available from one of the big manufacturers. I'm thinking Speer...

This should have old Einstein spinning in his grave...

So are we saying that because the .17 is sooo fast we can apply the good old theory of relativity.

The faster things go, the heavier they get.

This should mean that little sucker will weigh as much as a house by the time it hits anything.

OK .44, here's how that works.

To determine KE you multiply mass X velocity squared.

So if you double mass, you double KE.

But if you double velocity, you SQUARE KE.

Speed kills......

I WAS SHOCKED TO HEAR TODAY ON DICOVERY WINGS THAT THE M-16A WAS FIRST SHOWN TO GEN LEMAY AND HE WANTED IT FOR AIRBASE DEFENSE BUT CONGRESS TURNED HIM DOWN. THEN NAM CAME ALONG AND THE REST HISTORY.

HAWG, WELL YOU COULD ALSO HOOK UP A NIT CART AND PUMP OR LOWER THE STRUT FOR ACCURACY<img src=icon_smile_big.gif border=0 align=middle><img src=icon_smile_tongue.gif border=0 align=middle><img src=icon_smile_wink.gif border=0 align=middle>
OR JUST FIRE A MAV!!!!

I REALLY THINK FOR CLOSE UP JUST GIVE ME A TOMPSON IN 45ACP OR MY TRUSTY 30 CARBINE WITH A 30 RD CLIP OR BETTER YET A M2 CARBINE.

BUT I WOULDNT BE WORRYING ABOUT AIMING WHILE RUNNING FOR THE NEAREST GRUNT TO HIDE BEHIND.

I JUST FIX'EM

PRESS TO TEST
