After reading that Coach has had a 20 year career in the Hog it got me thinking.
What can a pilot do to stay with a particular type?
For example, if a pilot decides during his first operational tour that the best flying to be had is in the Hog rather than the 'computer driven' Viper (highly likely), can a pilot request an A-10 for his next assignment....and subsequent assignments?

For active duty, best way to avoid ALFA tours (training command/ALO/UAV) and stay in your airframe is to be accepted to and graduate from weapons school. Otherwise, you generally get one, possibly two ops tours in your MWS. After that, most everyone will be required to do some sort of aforementioned ALFA or overseas short tour.
Pretty soon, guys can even choose to stay in the "computer-driven" Hog versus the "computer driven" viper.
