I was just wondering what the minimum range is for employing the GAU-8, that includes altitude as well as distance from the target.
Lets say the target is an APC, how close to the target would a pilot get before breaking off an attack.
If the info is classified, then fair enough, but I have noticed one or two silly stories in the press over here about a fratricide incident in OIF which I have issues with, I suspect some of the victims have been watching too many war films with low flying Japanese Zero's strafing fleeing soldiers........but then again I wasnt there so who knows?
All comments appreciated.

There's really nothing classified about it. We've trained to fire the gun down to a cease fire 75' AGL and 2000' S/R. However, that has to be qualified. Nowadays there really isn't a reason to continuously employ the weapon that low and that close. Given... against hard targets such as tanks, we definitely want a slant range of less than a mile and our squadron had our share of low altitude flying during OIF for TIC situations and weather requirements.

Thanks for replying TG, those were the sort of figures I imagined from stuff I 'd seen in books etc.

As for the avatar, it was the result of a bored half hour last week.
Far from being buzzed by a low flying Hog, I 'made' the pic from a shot I took last year of 77-259 which hangs from the roof at the American Air Museum at Duxford, when you see the doctored picture up close you can see the joins where I crudely pasted the sky together!
prkiii, I can email you the pic, plus another undoctored one from another angle if you want.
