I have a used 30MM Hawg gun barrel in my garage. When I was at Eielson we had a box of about 10 of them in the life support garage forever. I ended-up giving them away and got one for myself. So, I am soliciting ideas on what to do with it. Right now it's just about 100 pounds of steel, but I'd like to make something nice out of it. If it helps to get your mind working, I've also got 7 used shell casings from the first time I ever shot the gun (bribed a Weapons troop to secure them for me). I'm not a drinker, so please no more shot glass ideas. Hope this solicits some thought amongst WT alums. If I use your idea I'll take photos and send them your way. Cheers...

Mount it on a nice Maple Plaque. With a little Brass Plate.

With this mere 100lbs of steel, Hostile Nations fell before it's Rain of Justice.

When I was at Moody, the guys made a wooden gun stock in proportion to the 30mm barrel. It made the biggest looking rifle I've ever seen. It was like 10 feet long and you could barely hold it up.
They also made a bandalera with 30mm rounds in it and gave the whole outfit to our maintenance officer whe the 70th disbanded.

When I left Eielson I was offered a barrel that our weapons toads had, but I didn't want to have to explain to the Canadians at the border, about this huge gun barrel strapped to the luggage rack on top of my Trooper.

cheers

DB, ROFL I like the rifle idea!! A guy a work (X weapons troop) had the first foot or so cut off and then had a "cut-away" made from it and mounted a round in it and placed it on a desk plaque..looks nice.

As for the shells, I've see them made into nice wind-chimes by cutting them different sizes and hanging a 50calaber round (dummy) as the striker, use to have a website you could buy them from I'll see if I can find it later.

At the NCO Club here at Barnes ANGB has the rifle barrels as foot rails on the bar. They are really cool. A blacksmith can make the mounts for them or you can make your own. I sold an old barrel at a flea market to a guy who was going to do the same thing. If you had a breakfast bar or breakfast nook in your kitchen with stools you could do the same thing. I guarantee you would be the only guy on the street with one.

When I used to go TDY to Aviano Italy, we frequently stayed in a ski resort in Pianco Vallo (I think that's the spelling). The owner of the hotel was a huge fan of the Hog and the 81st FS. I believe we gave him a barrel after it had been polished and like MrMudd said, it was mounted on a nice wooden plate. The polish looked something like a polished round would after being cleaned up.

I think I should keep it the way it is..... it's made as a barrel, why not display it as a barrel? just put it in a large frame, add a nice picture in the frame....

or even better print a Hog picture in XXL size... use this as background in a frame and put the barrel in front of it.... you can use a photo-shopped picture that matched better (make it darker or just adjust the colour)

You could always go to (JAIL) for having a controled item. The only way you can have a gun barrel is to demil it. You may have sections of it but not the complete barrel. But any way I have seen the breach,a section midway down, and about two inch. back from the muzzle milled out to exspose the rifling than they put a projectile down the bore so it can be seen in the openings and at the breach a complete round(casing and projectile)than they mounted it on a wooden base it looked great.

Hey Goob I have seen a barrel done as you said. A few years back the guys from Eilson came through on their way to the sandbox. They gave our cew chiefs a big plaque with polished shells and mahogany projectiles monted in a milled out barrel. It is very nice indeed. But I am sure it would be rather pricey.

On second thought, you could just send it to me. I'll add it to my Squadron Bar :)

I got a piece of 20mm. The breach end. A buddy in the shop took the muzzle to polish up for a plaque, I'd ask why was it bad?

Me, I was going to take mine, build up a scale howitzer or gun carriage, and put it in there. I was thinking, and wondering if they cartridges are reloadable, if so, I'd have something fun for the Fourth of July.

Put it in your closet as a hanger pole<img src=newicons/bounce.gif border=0 align=middle>

I have a breech-end sitting in my garage. Given to me by a friend of a friend who worked on Hogs. She's a C-5 flight engineer now.

Pete if you get someone to cut the end off of that and then slice it in half (down the middle) it makes a nice piece for a plaque. It takes someone with a special machine to do it. The torch method leaves a lot to be desired.

We had some breeches done out here some time ago that went down to be chromed but came back a gold shade chrome I was told that the nickle tank was too hot so the came back that way (they gave it to us for free) but it was great looking they had brass projectiles with pollished casings.

Find someone with a milling machine if they don't.
