I was talking to a Lt at Spang yesterday, he said Syracuse replaced the TF-34s in their jets before they converted to F-16s. I was wondering what engine they replaced the -34s with, and how did it work out?

Syracuse transitioned out of the A10 back in the 80's. and Deployed to wwGulf1 with the 16's They have been a 16 squadron ever since.

Too my knowledge No A10 has changed its engine type.

What the Lt. is saying makes absolutely no sense. Was he a former Enlisted guy in the unit.

Engines are replaced all the time for serviceing. Was he makeing a claim that Their Previous a10's are flying with an engine type differnt from a TF-34? Or was he saying the TF-34 they had Was upgraded to a newer revision of the Same motor?

The only thing I can figure is he was talking about changing all the "high time" engines that were nearing time change before send them to other units, which is normal ops.

Either that or the unit changed over to the TEMS modified engines. That would be the TF34GE100A designation. I'm pretty sure that was about the time frame of that mod.

OK, a newer version of the TF-34 would make sense, but he made it sound like a different engine. Of course I was kinda tanked up on cold medicine and made have heard him wrong, and he is a pretty good bud so I don't think he was pulling my chain (sts), so I will chalk this up to static on my part.

Thanks, it didn't make sense and I knew I could get the ground truth from you guys. This forum really does kick ass, I stand in awe of your collective knowledge! <img src=newicons/anim_bow.gif border=0 align=middle>

I remember when we did the mod at DM, we would just install the "new" engine. The old engine would be turned into the shop for a rebuild and then fitted with the TEMS mod. That engine, of course, would then be turned back to the flightline for install.

Just in case you are wondering Max the TEMS system is Turbine Engine Monitering System. It is a system that allows all the engine operating parameters to be fed in to a computer when the engines are initially installed. Some of them are PLA references, ITT settings at different power settings, Fan speeds, fuel flows etc etc. When the jet is flying the system moniters the actuall engine and if any of the miriad of parameters goes outside of its boundaries, it takews momentary picture of ALL the engines set parameters at that instant. his way the one malfunctioning or out of bounds system can be compared to the whole operating spectrum when the jet lands. They are displayed in the nose wheel well on a simple display unit that gives an alfa-numeric code after each flight.

Many thanks, I was doing a little hunting on the web and found a site that said the 355 TFW began modifying their Hogs with TEMS in Feb 86. Has it been around that long? I know the 138 TFS began their conversion to FASTASS CAS (no laughing, please, I really think they thought it would work!) in 1988, completed in March 1989. The timing seems right to correspond with the "new engines" comments.

!986..........let me see..............I was still an airman in the Navy at that time. Actually I was haze grey and underway in 1986. But that would seem about right for the tems mod timeframe. By the way I was looking at the patch above your right pocket on your BDU's. Are you a SERE instructor ?

We were finishing up our TEMS mods at woodbridge in early 88 when I got there. We still had several birds with ETTR's for several months before the complete mod. I dont know the time friam for state side mod completes.

TEMS question for you engine guys.

What's the purpose of the TEMS codes 53-71 that all state, for example:

"T2C data invaild"

What are T2C, PLA, VG, PS3, PAMB, PTO, PT5, etc?

And why sense or display invalid data?

See this everytime I have to reference a TEMS code, and have always wondered what the heck they are. The CCs I'd ask never knew.

Still things I don't know even with 15 days remaining.....

The TEMS Related codes that are listed at the bottom of the TEMS data code sheet (located in the back of the forms binder) are codes that are monitered by the TEMS system but have more to do with the pointy heads than with the engine. Remember that the avionocs supply outside info to the aircraft. Some of the codes (I think its 66 <img src=icon_smile_question.gif border=0 align=middle>) is actually from a sensor that is installed on the engine but isnt used in the TF34-100A. It is nstalled for the model used in the S3 Viking, but is a basic sensor. So while they apply, they are less critical and often times are carried in the book untill the sensor can be changed at the next available opportunity.............which may be never. The real man to ask about this would be Mike Pijar. He's the guy with the POW / MIA avatar. He is an engine GOD.

I've heard the F-117s referred to as "stink bugs." Why is this, since I don't think they look like a pentatomid?

When in the desert the black bugs that really stink thus stink bugs kind of resemble the 117, primarily because they are black, just a nick name... Does the a-10 really look like a warthog? Its just a comparison to the acft to somthing. A 15 dosent look like an eagle, the 16 dosent look like a falcon but does resemble the properties of a 'lawn dart' <img src=icon_smile_wink.gif border=0 align=middle>. Get the point?

Type7, those codes are letting you know that you are not receiving valid data from those particular sensors. PLA is power lever angle which is a sensor on the fuel control where the throttle cable connects to it. Its purpose is to tell us what the throttle setting was when a problem was encountered. PLA data invalid means we are not getting proper info on throttle settings.

Well, usually nicknames have a reason behind them, and I <i>DO</i> happen to think the A-10 looks like a warthog, and that the F-111 looks like an Aardvark. "Eagle" and "Falcon" are both company names, and I've never put stock in "official" aircraft titles. lol

IMHO I think it was because of the relationship to Locheed's Skunk Works.
