This is a first for me, how could it happen?

6/15/2004 - BARKSDALE AIR FORCE BASE, La. (AFPN) -- A weapons accident here June 10 caused one injury.

Staff Sgt. Brent Russell, a 917th Maintenance Squadron aircraft armament systems mechanic, was injured when a Gatling gun inadvertently discharged a 30 mm training round during repairs. The round penetrated a steel door causing shrapnel to strike the Airman who was in the next room.

“The quick response of his fellow workers and the emergency first responder saved the Airman’s life,” said Brig. Gen. Jack C. Ihle, the 917th Wing commander.

Sergeant Russell is currently in stable condition at a local hospital.

An investigation into the cause of the accident is ongoin

Wow that would suck. Glad the guy is allright, but stable condition sounds like its a little worse than is being let on. Really hope he's allright.

By this time tomorrow I shall have gained either a pearage or Westminster Abbey........Nelson

Seems as the gun was removed with a round or two still left in in, I agree 1st time I have heard of a gun being removed with ammo............unless the gun was removed for being 'jammed'.... But if memory servs me correctly removed jammed guns still have the maint done at the hot gun area untill all rounds are removed. Sounds like someone missed it

This is a real strange one, the gun made it to the back-shop with rounds still inside! <img src=icon_smile_question.gif border=0 align=middle><img src=icon_smile_question.gif border=0 align=middle>

Dice this is not the first time this has happened. England had the same incient back in the early 80's. They were lucky as no one was injured. I would say the crew that took the gun out and the expiditer have some explaining to do. However like I said back in the early 80's this happened at England AFB. After that incident we at RAF Bentwaters used a wooden dowel to verify no rounds were in the gun. This is done by sticking the dowel down the end of the barrels. The dowel was painted white with 7 red rings at varying depths at one end. We decided to do this because in the early days this was also part of the hot gun procedures. Eventually we got better hot gun procedures but we retained the dowel and only used it for the reason stated above.

Glad he's OK, too and hope he continues to recover. Does he earn the "Purple Tusk" medal/ribbon?

There was one I heard about, round went through just about everything in the building. At some point it hit the bathroom if Irecall correctly, and they supposedly still have the partition or whatever with the hole in it.

One of the airplanes I crewed at D-M fired 4 rounds across the ramp. It happened around 1980ish. It was even the subject of an article in the "TAC Attack" magazine. The title of the article was "I didnt know it was loaded". Apparently there was a miscommunication on a friday night on swing shift and the weapons expiditer annotated in the turn over log that the jet (77-0222) had the ammo downloaded for some form of gun functional check the next day. Needless to say it wasn't done. The weapons crewed failed to notice this and setup the airplane for the functional check and pulled the trigger. It was one of the coolest noises I have ever heard!!! Every colonel with a white top sedan on the base showed up in less than 10 mins wanting to know what the hell happened! It made an indeible mark in my mind about not wandering around in front of forward firing weapons during loading/unloading and after that during routine ops checks!!!!

He said that at one time, nukes were part of ammo. Apparently there were enough problems that they created a seperate career field for the things.
