I remember the 81st TFW at Bentwaters & Woodbridge having a sortie surge day many years back. Does anyone have any information regarding the date and number of sorties flown etc. I think it was more than 500!

I was at the 81 TFW from 82-84, sortie surges were a regular occurrence, usually to meet monthly sortie goals. Make the goal, get a day off!

500 sorties out of 120 A-10s would be tough, given the MC rate and a/c deployed to the FOLs. I remember big days, but not sure if 500+ was ever achieved. Hopefully someone will have a better memory and I do!

Dice, you're a cynic! <img src=newicons/Whatever_anim.gif border=0 align=middle>

Cheers! M2

Google search found this ...

89 aircraft flew 533 sorties over a 14-hour period. Can't find the date or exercise name though.

What are you then? I've seen more than gladly take info from people to "update your A-10 files" but I haven't seen you post anything here for others to enjoy. So you writing a book, building a website, what?

In the UK, a spotter is only interested in collecting numbers.....regardless of the plane.
An aviation enthusiast....which I am guessing shuck is one....is someone entirely different.
Very important to distinguish the two........not sure I understand number collectors, but each to their own.
If this board on the other hand is only for current/past military members, it should be stated in the registration requirements.
The Hog community should be big enough for everyone, be they military or civilian.....lets face it, the Hog needs all the support it can get.
Otherwise, make it like the Boars Den or whatever it is called.
I'd like to think anyone with an interest in the Hog is welcome here.....even ervani.

The exercise was allegedly called Porker 500 by the way......which also seems an excellent log-in name for a forum.

Bacon Bits, you're right and it's not for just for current/past military, ask anyone here I don't think like that. I also have the right to like or dislike someone and something just doesn't sit well with me about shuck and I have learded to trust my feeling..sorry if you don't agree with that.

Shuck, I don't what to talk around you like you're not here, I guess thinking about it the reason I don't like you is the fact you are always asking questions and never posting anything for others...seems to be a one way street with you. Hey just my opinion and I will leave you along now...didn't mean to highjack your thread....

Blimey, I must be mellowing in my old age, because I don't think anyone annoys me on this board..........yet<img src=icon_smile_wink.gif border=0 align=middle>
I think what got my attention Dice was the use of the term 'spotter'......it fills the many thousands of airshow goers in the UK with dread, spot anyone in an anorak with a note-pad and binoculars and the average airshow goer will do a 180.
Its about the worst insult you can hang on anyone with an interest in aviation!
Glad we have cleared that one up!

OK, war story, so go get coffee...

Back during my days at Bentwaters, a bud and I caught a ride with an O-6 in his staff car to the ops side of base (we were waiting for the base shuttle, he told us to hop in the back. Kinda weird being driven around by an O-6!). As we passed that infamous point along the base perimeter where the fence was the closest to the runway, known as "Commie Corner" (wasn't there the remains of a small church nearby?!?), he growled some nasty comments about the several individuals standing outside the fence with cameras and high-powered telephoto lenses. OK, I thought, maybe they are just interested in A-10s like we are. My O-6 (the DCM) had a huge window facing the runway and whenever a a/c would take off he would always turn around and watch it. I asked him why once and he replied that I would be amazed at how many times he's spotted a 'Remove Before Flight' streamer or panel that had popped open. I am sure that those events were rare but they must have happened more than once.

Anyhow, I had a point before I went lollygagging down memory lane. Oh yeah, I remember. Dice, for one, I just just having a little fun with ya, didn't mean to stir anything up. But in Shuck's defense (is that spelled with a 's' or 'c'?? Just a little cross-Atlantic humor for our English friends! <img src=icon_smile_clown.gif border=0 align=middle>), he did provide some data on the thread <i>'DESERT STORM Warthog Squadrons'</i> (http://forum.a-10.org/topic.asp?TOPIC_ID=6164) and <i>'What happened to this jet (80-258)?'(</i>http://forum.a-10.org/topic.asp?TOPIC_ID=6194). However, to continue the attack (ATTACK!), based on his responses in those threads, he sure does <b>SOUND</b> like a planespooter (purposely misspelled for any Scots out there! <img src=icon_smile_clown.gif border=0 align=middle>) to me!

Nobody has to like anyone, it's a free world. Much like my bud BB, I must be mellowing in my old age (or my bunker job is frying my brain). I know we get a lot of trollers (re: Zebco's) on this forum, but Shuck at least has contributed a little (46 posts). And those nasty spotters up in The Netherlands have taken the hobby to a whole new level with their website Scramble, so I can't fault one man's efforts!

By the way Shuck, why search criteria did you use to find out that info? Just curious, I couldn't find it, but there might be some guys at the WR museum who would know if it is public record. 89 aircraft flew 533 sorties over a 14-hour period, eh? That's a hell of a lot of locals!!! <img src=icon_smile_tongue.gif border=0 align=middle>

Cheers! M2

Bacon Bits, I didn't know that thanks for the info, I guess it has a different meaning here. Shuck sorry about that didn't mean to insult you in anyway.

I think I will take the advice someone posted here a few days ago, "never pass-up the opportunity to shut the f##k up!" <img src=newicons/anim_lol.gif border=0 align=middle>

Dice your a funny funny man. Your the moderator so you win, but I fail to see the problem with asking an A-10 related question from the 1980's on an A-10 specific forum! Must admit though, I did underline plane numbers at ringway back in the days when viscount, vanguard and VC10's were around.

Shuck, don't worry about moderator under my name, It's just a title and I have no power here. Glad I could give you a laugh and no there is no problem with asking "a" A-10 related question(s) here, have a nut!

DICE,YOU HAVE A GOOD POINT .
YOU AND A FEW OTHERS HAVE BEEN ON THIS BOARD SINCE IT WAS BORN, AND THEIR HAS BEEN ALOT OF "INFO" DOGS AROUND.
ASKING A SIMPLE QUESTION OR 2 THEN 3 AND SO ON GETTING THEIR RESEARCH DONE WITHOUT LOOKING.
SO YOUR RADAR LIGHTS-UP!
THIS IS A GOOD PLACE TO TALK ABOUT AND "SHARE" INFO FOR PERSONAL USE,BUT IMO THAT SOME PROFIT FROM IT WITHOUT GIVING CERDIT TO THE SOURCE.

THATS JUST MY THOUGHT
