No one person comes up with an aircraft design but it's a team of engineers. There may be a driving force (one person) but you can not say he/she is the person who designed the aircraft.

Anyone who championed the A-10, whether it was concept, design, funding or politics, is to be considered a driving force. Peter Smith's book makes that abundantly clear.

If I had to choose one name for the design of the A-10 it would have to be Dr. William Curtis or Mr. Pierre Sprey.

Well, upoopupants, I was told it was a man named Vince Tizio. He was the champion of the AX configuration that actually became the A-10. There were many concepts under consideration, including things that look like the A-9 and the Frogfoot, but he insisted that the low wing/H-tail/aft podded engines concept was the winner. I know it was not the the company co-founder ,and chief engineer emeritus, Alexander Kartveli. When told of the intention to use protruding head rivets on the external surface, Mr. Kartveli said (in a Russian accent) "You think Air Force wants airplane that looks like a pickle?". His masterpiece was the F-105.

I don't know who exactly came up with the design for the aircraft but who ever the guy was that came up with the weapons system must have had a daughter that was dating a weapons troop cause that system is so hard to maintain its not even funny.

I'd have to agree with Dice on this on, the Hog's weapons system isn't all that bad to work on. After working both it and F-16's, the hog is definatly the easier of the two.

While I'm not a weapons troop I'll have to agree with Dice and Hogloader, at least you have room to work on the Hog's gun vs that of the Lawndart.

If you think it's bad now wait until PE...MFD's, HOTAS, WCMD/JDAM..the list goes on and on!

A-10 and JDAM...those are two words that don't belong in the same sentence.

Why?

You saying the a10 is unworthy of recieving a precision engagement capability?

IMHO it's not that it's unworthy it's the fact it's taking the A-10 in the wrong direction! There are enough PE capable aircraft in the inventory now, by adding all this "stuff" MC rates are going to drop through the floor! What happen to reliability and maintanability, two of the main design features (that have served her well BTW) of the A-10?

Dice, I'll have to respectfully disagree for now. I think it's premature to say that MC rates will fall. With all of the new equipment being installed, including massive rewiring, I think the MC rates have the possibility of going up. Hell the MFCD's have to be more reliable than the TVM. With the new wiring to the weapon stations, maybe the Specs won't have to bail out the Loaders with troubleshooting wiring so much!...LOL Also the digital data link promises to provide a reduction in fratricide, long needed IMHO.

MUGS, I couldn't have said it better myself. The massive amounts of rewiring will undoubtably save the declining MC rates of the airframe. I'll also look forward to not seeing weapons troops coming into the spec office asking how the mavrick works and can I fix it for them....ROFL. PE is good for the A-10A (Soon to be A-10C)!

Mugs, just wait and see my friend....the days of fixing an A-10 with a tool box and a volt meter will be gone soon.... Bomb doesn't drop now what could be the problem, HOTAS, IFFC, CICU, 1760, TER...
