<i>NYT: COLLAPSE OF THE EARTH'S MAGNETIC FIELD ACCELERATES
Mon Jul 12 2004 18:17:38 ET

The collapse of the earth's magnetic field, which both guards the planet and guides many of its creatures, appears to have started in earnest about 150 years ago, the NY TIMES is planning to report on Page Ones Tuesday.

Science reporter Bill Broad has filed a report, according to newsroom sources, which explores how: 'The field's strength has waned 10 percent to 15 percent so far and this deterioration has accelerated of late, increasing debate over whether it portends a reversal of the lines of magnetic force that normally envelop the earth."

Broad explains: "During a reversal, the main field weakens, almost vanishes, and then reappears with opposite polarity. Afterward, compass needles that normally point north would point south, and during the thousands of years of transition much in the heavens and Earth would go askew."

Broad claims: "A reversal could knock out power grids, hurt astronauts and satellites, widen atmospheric ozone holes, send polar auroras flashing to the equator and confuse birds, fish and migratory animals that rely on the steadiness of the magnetic field as a navigation aid."

AWWW doomsday bullshit!!!

ok this has happened before a couple of time and all of earth's animles weren't killed. A little more radiation going to come in, and there is going to be an increase in the cases of cancer. stop complaining and put some lead on your house.

TRIT IS RIGHT FLYBOY,

IT AINT <img src=newicons/anim_bs.gif border=0 align=middle> ITS GOING TO HAPPEN.
MAYBE NOT IN OUR ;IFE TIME, BUT THERE EVIDANCE THAT POINTS TO IT.
LOOK AT A COMPASS,IT POINTS TO TRUE NORTH WHICH IS I THINK 7-9* OFF TO THE LEFT.NOT NORTH STRAIGHT UP AND DOWN.
OVER THE YEARS IT HAS DRIFTED SOUTH.

THE STUDIES THAT HAVE BEEN GIVEN AND ARE STILL GOING ON CAN PRODUCE A COPY OF THE EARTH MAGNATIC FIELD AND CHANGES AND IT SHOWS A WEAKING OF THE FIELDS.

SO ITS NOT BS,BUT JUST ONE OF THOSE THINGS IF IT HAPPENS IT HAPPENS AND WE DEAL WITH IT,IF WERE STILL AROUND

It makes me think of the global warming bullshit. 1700 of the worlds scientists signed a statement confirming that as fact. Problem is, they had better publicity than the 16000 who signed a statement to the opposite FACT. I wonder where this person who came up with this magnetic shift crap gets his paycheck and what it takes to justify it? If he says the sky is falling, maybe he gets to keep his funding and grants another couple of years.

no no no, you miss understand me I believe that the poles are truly is shifting, and the magnetic feild will weaken, this is all fact. But it will not weaken to the point that it will kill everyone. Yes the poles will flip, and have before! They have geological proof. They also have proof that the animals survived. The field will weaken, but not to the point where a significant amount of people get radiation poising.

What makes you so sure Smitty?

Are you the navigator in that steel tube you ride in?

If so, i'd think you'd probably know. ;)

Perhaps I didn't say what I was thinking clearly. I know for a fact that poles shift. What I'm saying is why is there only one person reporting it. Scientists are notorious alarmists. I would much sooner believe that the poles are shifting during our lifetimes if there was a much broader amount of proof. Mayhaps I am too skeptical but I've grown tired of our environmental "friends" spouting off as soon as they have information that fits what they have been looking for. There is a very good possibility that the fields are doing their shift over the last 150 years, however, it could be just inconsistencies in equipment, data, and the people who are entering it. Science demands a controlled environment and extreme scrutinization of the facts. This blurb isn't enough for me to but a new South bearing compass. If there is truth in this we will be hearing a lot, lot more in the near future.

This is nice "what if" stuff to talk about at cocktail parties or as a premise for a disaster movie. I think Smitty is right when he compares this announcement to global warming. It is only a matter of time until someone, probably in a NY Times editorial, decides that the USA is at fault for the magnetic field shift. Then politicians will take a stand on this "issue" and California will take the lead in demanding a halt to iron ore mining, skyscraper construction and bridge building. Auto scrapyards will be declared magnetic pollution. Refridgerator magnets will be recycled to be buried in deep caves to "save the planet". Ooohh the humanity. I think I still have my Y2K kit around somewhere. Yeah, that's the ticket. I can be one of the last survivors...Omega man.

THE PROOFS IS THERE FOR THE POLE SHIFTS TO HAPPEN,BUT THE FIGHT IS OVER WETHER OR NOT IT CAUSED A MAJOR EXTITCION OF ANIMALS AND SUCH.

THE POLES HAVE DRIFTED, TO THE EXTENT OF THE EFFECTS WE'LL ONLY KNOW WHEN WERE LIVING IN THE SOUTHERN HEMISPHERE.

More freaky nature occurances:
<i>'Rogue waves' reported by mariners get scientific backing

Wed Jul 21, 1:07 PM ET

PARIS (AFP) - European satellites have given confirmation to terrified mariners who describe seeing freak waves as tall as 10-storey buildings, the European Space Agency (ESA) said.

"Rogue waves" have been the anecdotal cause behind scores of sinkings of vessels as large as container ships and supertankers over the past two decades.

But evidence to support this has been sketchy, and many marine scientists have clung to statistical models that say monstrous deviations from the normal sea state only occur once every thousand years.

Testing this promise, ESA tasked two of its Earth-scanning satellites, ERS-1 and ERS-2, to monitor the oceans with their radar.

The radars send back "imagettes" -- a picture of the sea surface in a rectangle measuring 10 by five kilometers (six by 2.5 miles) that is taken every 200 kms (120 miles).

Around 30,000 separate "imagettes" were taken by the two satellites in a three-week project, MaxWave, that was carried out in 2001.

Even though the research period was brief, the satellites identified more than 10 individual giant waves around the globe that measured more than 25 metres (81.25 feet) in height, ESA said in a press release.

The waves exist "in higher numbers than anyone expected," said Wolfgang Rosenthal, senior scientist with the GKSS Research Centre in Geesthacht, Germany, who pored over the data.

"The next step is to analyse if they can be forecasted," he said.

Ironically, the research coincided with two "rogue wave" incidents in which two tourist cruisers, the Bremen and the Caledonian Star, had their bridge windows smashed by 30-metre (100-feet) monsters in the South Atlantic.

The Bremen was left drifting without navigation or propulsion for two hours after the hit.

In 1995, the British cruise liner Queen Elizabeth II (news - web sites) encountered a 29-metre (94.25-feet) wall of water during a hurricane in the North Atlantic.

Its captain, Ronald Warwick, likened it to "the White Cliffs of Dover."

In the next phase of research, a project called Wave Atlas will use two years of "imagettes" to create a worldwide atlas of rogue wave events and carry out statistical analyses, ESA said.

The goal is to find out how these strange, cataclysmic phenomena may be generated by ocean eddies and currents or by the collision of weather fronts, and which regions of the seas may be most at risk.

Finding out could help ship architects and the designers of oil rigs and their operators to skirt the menace.

That study isn't fair. The waves are just Rosie O'donnell swimming in the ocean.
