Did the US ARMY ever fly the A-10 operationally? My friend (ex-army) claims to have seen A-10's in action with US Army decals and flown by warrant officers. My opinion (ex-ASAF) is that he has ingested too much army food and the A-10 has always been flown by the Air Force.

This concluded this months discussion of whether the Army ever flew the A-10. Next on todays agenda are the stories of all the guys that were saved over 'in the Nam' by A10's.

Thanks. Of course he isn't buying it and is doing the "yeah, buts" now. Says that DOD was going to transfer the A-10's to the Army in 1990-ish, and the Army must have developed their own units at that time. Temporarily. Maybe. Either that or it must have been some sort of covert army unit...(possibly to repel an alien inasion?

Actually the Army was given a batallion of Super A-10C's with the laser gau upgrade package to repel any potential attacks from Klaktor 5 or Mexico.

No. When the USAF was talking about dumping the A-10 for the A-16 (spit), the Army was talking about trying to take them as the grunts love the Warthog (CAS is a beautiful thing). However, I was told there is some Congressional limit or something on the types/sizes of a/c the Army can have (to prevent them from trying to have another Air Corps, flying their own C-130s, A-10s, etc), thus killing the notion. It never got beyond rumor status.

My uncle who is a W4 Chinook pilot told me that a few Army types went as far as going through fix wing qual and RTU for the A10 in the late 80’s. Then after Desert Storm the idea was tossed.
