Welcome Mike, I've been a fan of your work for a while now. I've been colecting A-10 door art for a few years and hope to write a book on the subject. I've seen and photographed your doors but do see a new one called "Halleys comet"..very nice!

Tell me do you come-up with the ideas and artwork or do you work with the pilots and crew chiefs on the designs? I would love to hear the stories behind the images if you ever have the time!

Here's my website and link to the door art section...

Feel free to drop in any time, there's a great bunch of guys here!!

Mike

I have always thought that Boss Hog door would look good painted on the back of an A-2 leather jacket...has anyone ever approached you with that idea? Wouldn't do it without your permission.

Cheers! M2

So what does it take to get door art done by the infamous doonboy? Not a pic of one, but on one of our doors that doesn't have any yet.

Dice, I know that 969's door "SLAG" stands for Short Little Angry Guy. I know the DCC and it fits him to a tee. Some would like to change the meaning of that first word to something else though. haha. That was the *&$#@ jet that gave me my first hawg bite. It's at Eielson. There are several that I know from my time in the 25FS in Korea. I'll put some explanations together and get them to you as soon as I have a chance.

Thanks for the info browneyes I would have never guessed SLAG stood for that, looking forward to hearing about other doors!!

Hey gang. Since some of you seem to be interested in the "story behind the doors" type thing...here's what I can remember.....Smitty is my point guy at the base and pretty much lets me do what I want.
-BRAVE HAWG, Smitty asked specifically for the Mel Gibson face paint idea, with the gun raised like a sword
-ASS KICKIN' CHICKEN, this one was my take on the classic cigar chompin' take no prisoners type American eagle...they added the lettering afterwards and when I first saw it I was like...."Ummn, guys, that's supposed to be an eagle" I didn't know what "chicken" meant at the time ...sheesh what a dope!
NOW BRING ON THE BABES!
Of course, there is no way around it, the babes are my fave aspect of nose art. I love the WWII nose art, even though it was usually pretty badly drawn, it was fun, and not too pc.
-LADY LIBERTY, in my original drawing she was a bit sweeter looking, but with everything that was going on in the world at the time, she just became a bit more pissed off in the final art.
-BOSS HAWG, originally I think Smitty asked for a take on Boss Hog from the Dukes of Hazard, with the car with the the horns on the grill etc... but I showed him a sketch for this one and it was okayed on the spot.
-HALLEY'S COMET-just finished this one last week. The pilot's name is "comet" Halley, so some kind of spacey thing was called for.

Thanks Mike for taking the time to give us the background on your work, I will have to add your site to my favs so I can keep-up on you door art projects.

I've been hinting around to some of my friends who have been, are, or are going to be deployed for the war on terror (damn that doesn't read right) trying to get them to do some "true" nose art but, I belive my words have fallen on deaf ears. I know they have better things to do over there and the rotational periods are short but, I would sure love to see some good old fasion nose art come out of over there. I also belive it would be a great PR boom for anyone who did it...

Dice, There is a door on one of our jets that just got done right before our jets left home. When it gets back I'll get some pics and put them on here. It's a great door to support the War on Terror. I still want to try and get someone to do some door/nose art to honor COSMO. He was a great guy and I miss him dearly. So if anyone knew him or has any ideas for the art please let me know. Thanks.

Browneyes, maybe I missed it (I can be slow) but are you stationed at Eielson and was COSMO the pilot of aircraft 700? OK checked your profile and answered my own questions...told you I can be slow ROFL!

Also is this the door you're talking about...

I know a couple of people at Eielson like your AFETs rep and a few more who I've been friends with for years and who I'm in contact with now. Never say sorry for offering to help me out with art or anything else, I should be the one thanking you!

I know how you feel we lost a member of our squadron (maintenance person) while I was stationed with the 70th FS at Moody AFB GA and we were deployed to Al-Jaber in 1996. It's never easy to lose one of your own...

Hawg166, the only units NOT allowed to have door art is the two state side ACC units (Pope & DM) because of the way each command has written their AFIs and definded "nose art". PACAF, USAFE, the Guard and Reserves has written their AFI to exclude the door in their definition. It's really interesting looking at the AFIs and seeing how one word can chnage the definition of Nose art and how this definition is then applyed to the command and their aircraft.

Thanks for stealing my pic mark.............dickhead.
Anyway, the crew chief for 78-649 is guy named Jason McLear. Something happened somewhere at sometime, probably a involving alchohol (big surprise) and Jason ended up looking like a drunken Panda Bear. But I am not privy to the details.

By this time tomorrow I shall have gained either a pearage or Westminster Abbey........Nelson
