One of my Army NCOs asked me an interesting question that I would like to pose to you all...he said he was once told by an Apache driver that three AH-60s could knock off a batallion of tanks. Not sure if that is true or not, but he was wondering how many tanks a single A-10 could plink with a maximum weapons load. Obviously I want the unclass/non-OPSEC answer if there is one, or if someone would like to send me email to my work email or even SIPRNET that works for me. I am interested as well, and I gave him my guess, but I added that I could ask here and get some more definitive numbers.

Cheers! M2

Three apaches can theoreticly knock out 48 tanks, not including the guns. That is 6 tanks more than a full battalion.(14 tanks per company, 3 companys per Bn).

I doubt that 48 is a very realistic number.

About how many rounds are fired on one individual tank in a strafing pass?

Like Coach said above, it depends.

What are the ground commander's intentions? Does he want M-kill, F-kill, or K-kill? What are the threats in the area? What is the weather in the area? Do you want to employ on other targets with the bombs and Maverick to lighten the jet up, or are the tanks a priority target right now?

It might seem like these considerations are a bit much to answer your question, but all these factors (and more) are going to add up to what type of weapons delivery pass you're going to perform, what slant range you're going to employ at, and what the resultant weapons effects are going to be.

Heck, one well-placed 30mm round could be enough to completely destroy a main battle tank, but it would be the 'golden BB' shot. Or, you could open up from a long slant range and do nothing but piss them off...but if your intent is to suppress, that might be a good thing (while your wingman sneaks in from another direction and schwacks them).

I will say an 'average' combat burst is probably slightly more than two seconds or so, but again, it all depends.

Roughly. The gun spins up to speed in the first second, so usually 50 to 60 rounds come out, followed by about 70 rounds per second thereafter.

The reason I was asking was to get an idea of how many shots you get. This would be how many tanks you can kill with a full load.

As I said earlier:

In training, a burst of slightly less than 1 second is normal...shooting for quarters, if you will.
