If your talking of the video these screenshots came from...
<img src="http://www.geocities.com/crewchiefsmakeithappen/eject01.jpg" border=0><img src="http://www.geocities.com/crewchiefsmakeithappen/eject02.jpg" border=0><img src="http://www.geocities.com/crewchiefsmakeithappen/eject03.jpg" border=0><img src="http://www.geocities.com/crewchiefsmakeithappen/eject04.jpg" border=0>
I'm pretty sure it's from when the A-10 was being designed/tested, to test the ejection seat. I think.

The incident occured during one of the first airborne firings of the gun. The aircraft encountered a dual engine flameout as a result of gun gas ingestion. One of the outcomes of the event was the addition of continuous ignition to the engines during gun firing along with a change in the propellant mix of the ammunition.

Interesting. I'd always thought that the continous ignition was there since day one.

This might be a start to another A-10 trivia contoversy. My recollection of this incident was that it was very late in the flight test program (late 70's), they were still playing with ammo propellant mixes that would be easier on maintenence but not cause fireballs, and that it was the sixth DT&E aircraft that was involved. That would make it tail number 73-1669. They encountered fireball conditions that caused the double flameout. The chase plane film is the source of the two stills at the beginning of this thread. I do not trust my memory so I called my associate at Grumman who has some records on these things. His memory was rusty but he agreed with Dice initially, saying he recalled both 668 and 669 crashing due to gun gas incidents, with 668 being the one with the film record. However, when he looked at his "attrit" list it said that 669 was lost on 6/08/78 due to a dual engine flameout while flying from Edwards, and 668 was lost on 3/11/82 at Eglin due to a loss of conrol event as a result of a pilot induced occilation. Therefore, I weigh in with the claim that the film is the 669 airplane. That's my story and I'm stickin' to it. We need to get to the bottom of this, or do we?

Off the top of my head, the pilots name was Francis Guideon........possibly jr, can't vouch for the spelling either because of the info coming straight from the old grey matter, rather than the page of a book.<img src=icon_smile_blush.gif border=0 align=middle>
