This bill is co-sponsored by 13 democrats, with good ole "Im a freaking moron" Charlie Rankel as the author.

It hasn't gone anywhere, there is absolutely ZERO republican support for this bill.

I wouldn't worry about it, the Republicans have not offered even a single iota of support.

That Bill was a Charlie Rangel (pronouned "wrangle") chess game ploy. It is not meant to pass. Instead, it was intended to trap the military hawks of the opposition, and rally the anti-war faithful. Draft avoidance/resistance was one of the more popular issues of the 60's. It was their glory days, and they think the issue may get some traction again now. They want to revive the conscription debate again, even though there is no serious demand for it. So far it is a yawner, getting nowhere.

so the f@@k what. if the nation is truly in a battle for its survival who gives a damn if you have to be called up to fight for it. This really pisses me off could you imagin during world war 2 using the threat of a draft to avoid finishing the war. We are blessed not to need a draft now, but if need it to survive as a nation then we should us it.

If I'm not mistaken, the Rangel Bill would conscript people for non military work too, so called civilian service for other purposes. That is one of the controversial aspects. The government already has conscription power in dire emergencies, as it should. The definition of an emergency is kind of the critical item. I think it is real strict and requires an act of congress. The selective service system still exists now, although it is dormant. My son is one of millions registered.

Yeah, someone sent this to me last week. At first I laughed it off and casually dismissed it... then I started to think about the political ramifications behind it.

The bill(s) (one in Senate, one in the HoR) obviously won't pass, and have been sitting dry-docked for almost two years or so now, but the whole thing smells funny. It's either been proposed to draw the lines more clearly between pro- and anti-military Congresspeople and backers, or it's someone's wet pipe dream that's going to disappear.

Personally I don't see this becoming anything more than a spark for debate and possibly a weak point on a political platform for someone down the road. In the current political atmosphere and military pressure being felt all around, I doubt that either party would profit from supporting a bill like this. The Dems would look like hypocrites with Kerry's blasting of the Iraqi situation, and the Republicans would draw even more criticism toward the same situation.

Let sleeping dogs lie... this isn't something to worry about.

Especially when you consider that recruitment has not really suffered as a result of the war on terror.

I personally know 3 people trying to enlist right now, and the standards are still very high. A lot of people are still turned away from the military. Long before a draft is implemented those standards could be relaxed, freeing up a very large pool of potential recruits.

C'mon, goose... we're all (well, most of us) grown men (and the occasional woman) around here. We're all civil (for the most part), and NONE of us are extremely opinionated (well, except for... oh, just about all of us). What could you possibly be afraid of? ;)

Seriously though, don't be afraid of sharing your opinion with everybody. Even if others don't agree with it, you're still giving them the chance to see things from another perspective (and as much as we all like sticking to our guns, sometimes "looking through someone else's eyes" is a good thing).

So what is it, bud?? We're all waiting now... ;)

THE 2 THINGS IN THE BILL I THOUGHT WERE STICKING OUT WERE

1. CIVIL SERVICE FOR ONES WHO COULDNT MAKE IT THRU THE SCREENING PROCESS.
2. WOMEN WILL BE REQUIRED TOO AND DRAFTED ALONG WITH MEN.

I HATE TO SAY IT BUT I AGREE WITH BOTH PARTS. EVEN THOUGH I HAVE A 17 AND 15 YR OLD BOTH BORN IN JANUARY IF IT CAME TO THIS THEY BOTH WOULD BE ALMOST SURE TO GO. I WE TALKED ABOUT IT BEFORE THIS AND THE WAR IN IRAQ,THEY HAVE THEIR FATHERS VIEWS ON PARTS OF IT BUT WOULD GO TO SERVE.
THE OLDEST SAID "IF MOM AND DAD CAN I WILL TOO" MADE ME PROUD.BUT
THIS STATEMENT PISSED ME OFF,SORRY MATT
" so the f@@k what. if the nation is truly in a battle for its survival who gives a damn if you have to be called up to fight for it. YOU CAN SIGN UP WITH ALL THE RIGHT BELIEFS AND CONVICTIONS AND TRAIN BUT THERE ARE THOSE THAT WHEN THE TIME COMES ."ARE SO DAMN AFRAID THEY CANT DO IT"
NOW I USE TO JUDGE THESE FOLKS UP AND DOWN EVERY WHICH WAY AFTER SEEING FIRST HAND GROWN MEN BREAK DOWN AND CRY NOT TO GO.
BUT I GUESS I'VE GOTTEN EITHER SOFTER OR WISER.
NO ONE CAN TELL SOMEONE TO DO SOMETHING I FEEL UNLESS YOU'VE BEEN THERE,NONE OF US KNEW HOW WE WOULD REACT WHEN THE TIME CAME,HELL I WAS SCARED TO DEATH I WOULDNT SEE MY KIDS AGAIN, REALLY AFTER THEY GAVE US OUT DATED EQUIPMENT,BAD FILTERS,OUT OF DATE INJECTORS ETC.. BUT I WAS LUCKY ENOUGH TO HAVE FRIENDS WITH ME THAT FELT THE SAME WAY "SCARED" SO WE SUPPORTED EACH OTHER.
I GUESS THE POINT IS "JUST BECAUSE" YOU DONT GIVE A DAMN"THERE ARE ONES WHO "DO GIVE A DAMN" THAT KNOWS WHAT IT FEELS LIKE.

I SEE IT ON TV AND ALOT OF OTHER PLACES TOO SO THIS REALLY ISNT A CHEAP SHOT AT ANYONE,ITS THE WAY I FEEL .

KNOWING WHAT I KNOW NOW,I'D STILL DO IT ALL OVER AGAIN.

I can relate to that Goose. Life in a warzone is a terrifying thing at times. The rest of the time it's just hard ass work filled with boredom.

I DIDNT CARRY A RIFLE,ONLY FOR A SHORT TIME OR CAME CLOSE TO THE "RAGS",SCUDDED ONCE AND THE ART AND THE MAV THING BUT WHAT GOT ME THE MOST WAS LAUNCHING THE PILOTS AND WONDERING IF HE WAS COMMING BACK? THEN WHEN THEY CAME BACK AT TIMES,THE LOOK ON THEIR FACE SAYS ALOT.
THATS WHAT STUCK IN MY MIND ALONG WITH A PILOT NOT COMMING BACK (STORR)THAT LEAVES A PIT IN YOUR "BELLY" EVEN THOUGH LATER HE WAS A POW.
I WASANT AT KKMC WHEN OLSAN CRASHED BUT HEARD ABOUT IT FIRST HAND FROM FOLKS WHO DID AND YOU STILL COULDNT HELP SHED A TEAR.

I GUESS THATS MY REASON,BUT I'D DO IT AGAIN IN A HEART BEAT IF THEY NEEDED ME I RATHER DIE FIGHTING THEN PROGRESS THIS WAY.
