Had an opportunity to meet some of the guys from Eilson this past week. Great job guys welcome home. Your jets looked like they need a good bath and some R&R also. Can tell you worked 'em hard.

By this time tomorrow I shall have gained either a pearage or Westminster Abbey........Nelson

Kicked two more out today on there way home. They have had it rough trying to get their birds across the pond. I hope they get home to warm beds and long legged girl freinds before another week goes by.

By this time tomorrow I shall have gained either a pearage or Westminster Abbey........Nelson

Just got back from Eielson, snowed every day the week I left. Tried to volunteer for a MRT to get the two stuck in the Azores..no luck..but it brings to mind the fact that their maintenance types didn't do a good job of training their pilots. Two jets stuck on a rock in the middle of the Atlantic for anti-skid problems? Me thinks a little risk analysis might have been in order.

Sorry Old Chief cant agree. There isnt any risk assesment there. Its broke. There were 2 broke right down the road while there was 2 on the rock , four in all, all on the same day.

Hmmmm, can't agree with you that "it's broke". A twenty plus year old jet flies with write-ups all the time, just thumb through the "K's", don't ever remember seeing any airframe with nothing in there. Hell, we got brand new aircraft direct from Hagerstown with two pages of "K" write-ups. As an example, a dead HUD is always broke for a combat mission, not broke for a ferry flight.

My point was this; just how bad do you need the anti-skid? It's September, no icy runways in the lower 48, your destination airport has 9600 feet, your alternate has 10,000 plus. Other than a heavy weight high speed (relative term for the A-10) takeoff, just how critical is the system? Balance that with a once a week rotator to get your parts (that may or may not be serviceable), a specialist that you only have one or two of that's going to have to stay with the broke jets, parts availability at your next stop, jacking the aircraft on a ramp where the winds usually exceed T.O. limits and a de-tank and re-tank. Dunno, seems like there's room for a little discussion. I'd love to have some driver input on this.

And the Azores is such a garden spot to wait in!

Old Chief...you're right but VERY wrong. All aircraft have some discrepancies, but that doesn't mean a system is broke. Have you seen what a high speed abort with a 42,000 A-10 does? If you're old, I'm sure you have.

Let me ask you this...what is the alternative to leaving the jet in the Azores until its fixed? Is getting it off the island worth the risk? Anti-skid is on the jet for a reason. If you are as old and wise about the Hog as you make yourself to be, you should know the anti-skid, brakes and nosewheel steering are all wrapped up together. Which one of those are you willing to go without while trying to take off or land on a wet runway with 30 knots of crosswind (Lajes). Or even your vanilla 9600 ft destination runway?

I agrre with Coach. Inop anti-skid is not the same as a "k" write-up. In fact (I forget the name of it), isn't there a list of items that have to work on the jet to even consider it air worthy? I believe anti-skid is one of them.
Cheers,
db

ps
I can empathize with the AK guys & gals. Was with the unit the first time they went to Kuwait and on the return trip we had Hawgs strung out half way around the globe. Waht a mess.

Ahhh, nothing like a little spirited discussion to wake the board up.

For Coach: If you read my post, my suggestion was for a little wiggle room. As far as I'm concerned, what the pilot says goes. I would never stick a pilot in a jet without him knowing everything that's wrong with it and if he elected not to take it, that's his call. I will, however, base some of my discussion on personal experience. Last time back from the desert, all the jets were code 1..UNTIL they hit home where they were then broke all to shee-ite, including, if memory serves me correctly, 3 anti-skid writeups <how odd they all broke landing at home>. As to the rest, yes, I've seen what happens when the hog aborts..pulled one out of the mud 'cuz she did exactly what the -1 said she'd do..veer to the right (gotta love that offset nose gear). And Coach, I don't make myself out to be anything other than someone who has worked the A-10 for 26 years..hell, even in retirement, I'm still working it though that's about to change <trash haulers here I come>.

Will do. He's fine. He's seriously thinking of Going Guard full time. There are some slots opening up and he hopes to snag one. If he does, it'll push his graduation back to next Dec, but a bird in the hand, etc. He's seeing the world. Alaska, Guam, (almost Japan), Tampa for his AOY stuff, and now at Hurlburt to support a Special Ops gig. He loves it. Little did I know that spring day I let that little 4 yr old help me change the oil that a wrench bender was born!<img src=icon_smile_wink.gif border=0 align=middle><img src=icon_smile_approve.gif border=0 align=middle>
