You guys here anything about an accidental BDU drop by a hog in the last couple days?

If so, what's the story as you understand it?

A-10 from Whiteman drops training munition in field

Democrat Staff

WHITEMAN AIR FORCE BASE -- An A-10 fighter jet from the 442nd Fighter Wing here accidentally dropped a small training munition Monday in Kansas.

No one was injured, and no property damage was reported, an Air Force spokesman said.

The munition was dropped about nine miles south of Smoky Hill Tower, just outside the Smoky Hill range facility near Salina, Kan., said 1st Lt. Charles E. Gulick, deputy chief of public affairs for the 509th Bomb Wing.

The accident sparked a grass fire. The aircraft safely returned to WAFB, where it was being inspected to find the cause of the accident.

The aircraft was on a training mission to the Smoky Hill range.

The dropped munition, a BDU-33, is a roughly 20-pound training aid that emits a smoke charge to gauge the accuracy of practice bombing missions.

A board of officers will investigate the incident, according to Lt. Gulick.

I've heard rumor that the "C.T.R." mod may have a few bugs in it yet?
Either that or a partially hung bdu that wiggled loose on the way home?

anytime an A-10 has a small mishap, it's sure that some dumb lawn dart F-16 will screw up much worse in the near future, except when pope hits the control towers

Coach , I think he was making rreference to the day in 1994 when an F16 from Pope broke airspace at Fort Drum and dropped 6 BDU 50's all at once. The guy hit a humvee, and the range tower. I was there I remember it.
Anyway I dont think that Bighog is aware that gentlemen from one A10 unit are not allowed to bash gentlemen from other A10 units because we are all on the same team and we have all had issues with pilots, jets and or mechanics at one time or another in our units histories.
He wasnt aware of that rule untill now. Next time the other board members will indoctrinate him in propper protocal.
You have been warned.

well at the least i viewed it less as bashing and more as friendly inter unit ribbing, we have all done it on our own times, it's part of what we do, but i also thought it was a-10's at drum...oops, my fault, no harm meant, guess i could have worded things better! and 166, you know me well enough to know what i mean after all is said and done, i guess now i know the "criteria" sorry if any offense

just sit back, and let the 30mm do the work!!!

Dont know Matt but this is a good story. Back in like 1997 think it wasm two other crew chiefs and I went to Fort Drumm for a week for an inter service week of work with the 10th Mountain guys. I think there was Army , Air Force, Guard, marines and who else I dont know. But the name of the excercise was Global Warrior. We got there on Sunday.......rainin' bullfrogs ! Well it rained for the next three days straight. No flyin' at all just sleepin in the vans. The FOL at Drumm was pretty austere back 8 or 9 years ago, just ask anyone that was there before it became legit. Any hoo, they opened the range finally on like Wednesday afternoon and not two hours later some Pope guys (I think F16's ?) broke airspaceand made a pass on the range. One of the guys dropped all his BDU 50's at one time. One went through the range tower and took out a desk while some guy was sitiing at it, and kept going through the wall. One of his others skipped on front of a Humvee and went right over it before burying itslf in the ground not far behind. Well soon after that, like within 2 minutes they closed the range again and never opened it. We went to Drumm for a week, never turned a jet, slept for a week in a wet van and soaked up a bunch of perdium. We know affectionately remember it as Global Disaster.

By this time tomorrow I shall have gained either a pearage or Westminster Abbey........Nelson

I wish we could blame that on the F-16s...it was a flight of A-10s up from Pope as part of an ORE or ORI. I can't recall the reason for the miss, but the aftermath at Pope was just as ugly as the the range tower.
