Never came too close to taking a boom though I agree with Max, pretty frustrating when the boomer was timid. We had mostly Guard boomers at Eielson so they were pretty good. Worst refuleing experience one ever was 7 hour deployment sortie in the weather for 6 of it. I remember waiting my turn on the right wing observation position on our 3rd tank and I was wickedly spatial D'd from a 70 knot crosswind. I was #6 in a 6-ship cell and the wx was bad enough that I could see 5 and a little of 4 but not the tanker. Man, is that uncomfortable...

HOGFIXER,

As typical in prep for an ORI, everybody's ass gets on fire over incidental crap that will not affect the ability to get bombs on target when needed. How you handle your nose dent problem with little worry or unnecessary effort is to get a disposition from depot for every nose that has a dent in it. Put a write up in the 781K and fly your happy butts off. IG cannot write it up as you have taken action (though minimal) to address it. In a perfect world there would be no K writeups. But show me a 20+ year old jet that has that. If I had a choice, between a page of K's or ulcers over a one week event, I'd take the writeups. You can't be faulted for proper forms entries.
Cheers

Yeah I agree but the 3-1 still shows structural limits on dents and the problem was or is, is that some people carry K write ups into an ORE / ORI that are two or three years old. That is what they get hit on. Propper documentation doesnt do ya a squat bit of good of you never make an effort to clear them.

By this time tomorrow I shall have gained either a pearage or Westminster Abbey........Nelson

Roger that on old K write-ups.
I'm just saying the over reaction by management is to FIX THE PROBLEM!!!!!
A dispo from depot may state to expand the limit or to have it repaired at the next depot visit and your covered.

Coach, I was the CC on 80-0157 when she went down at Moody in 1997. Report stated a hydro line chaffed through under the left slat and a elec. wire shorted in the same area causing a wing fire. This is what drove the slat TCTO in in 98 (I belive) which added washers under the slat hydro lines to move them out from the bulkhead more.

There was no leak in that area when I did the preflight and I had just been in that slat area (maybe a month before) and had inspected the whole thing.

Thing is she landed on the left wing, on a road, and even the ESs said there was not much left of the wing to work with. I think I've told the story of my last few nights with the jet and what my last words was to it...as I walked away after my thrid or fourth night of 12+ hours on it???

MINE TOOK A DUCK IN THE #1 SLAT AREA DURING A "MINI TIGER F&^%!"
IT DID AN IFE AT THE OLD ALEXANDRIA AIRPORT.
SINCE I ONLY LIVED 3 MILES AWAY THEY HAD ME DRIVE THE 12 MILES TO WORK TO GET A TOOLBOX AND GOV TRUCK TO DRIVE BACK OUT THERE TO BPO/PRE THE JET.
THE DAMN THING HIT UNDER THE SLAT PUT A HOLE IN IT..
HYDRO FLUID EVERY WHERE,FIXED THE LINE SERVICED THE HYDRO AND WAS TOLD BY OP'S TO PIN THE SLATS (?) TO KEEP THEM FROM WORKING (?)
THEY SENT A FCF PILOT OVER TO FLY HER STRAIGHT BACK TO THE PATCH.
THE PILOT SIGNED THE ER AND WE STARTED IT UP,GUESS WHAT THE SLATS GO UP.
THE PILOT ASKED WHY AND I SAID "BECAUSE THEY DO,THE PIN JUST KEEPS THEM STABLIZED "
SO EVERYTHING LOOKED GOOD AND SHE TOOK OFF,I WENT SCREAMING DOWN TO THE BASE TO BE THERE AFTER SHE LANDED,IT TAKES ABOUT 15MINS TO DRIVE THE DISTANCE.
WELL A FLT OF .1 HOURS TURNED INTO A 2.1 HOUR TOUCH AND GO FLT TO LOG IN FLT TIME.
HE LANDED AT 1730 AND I'D BEEN UP SINCE 0800 WORKING ON THE DAMN THING AND THEN P/S PUTS THE BIRD ON A 0500 TAKE-OFF THE NEXT MORNING.
I LEFT WORK AT 0600 THE NEXT MORNING 22 HOURS LATER BECAUSE IT WAS A "TIGER THRUST OH F&^%!" AND THE JET HAD TO FLY.
SO THEY TOLD ME I COULD COME IN AT 1500 SINCE EVERYONE ELSE WAS DO IN AT 1430 SO I COULD GET SOME REST<img src=newicons/anim_shock.gif border=0 align=middle><img src=newicons/anim_cussing.gif border=0 align=middle><img src=newicons/anim_lol.gif border=0 align=middle>
THEM WHERE THE GOOD OLE DAYS!

Dice,
157 wasn't the only one that had that problem. One of our pilots was the wing man to a jet that this happen and followed it down after the pilot punched out. As I recall it was a chaffed power line to one of the pylons that arc'ed on a hydro line and burnt through it causing the fire.

I remember the missing ballistic foam in the slat area became a big issue around 1999/2000. Unit wanted to PMC all their jets for it being gone.

Cheers
