JackB & I where talking the other day and came up with an interesting question. What was the shortest amount of time an active duty A-10 unit was assigned to a base and where was it?

My guess would be McCord....just from what I remember people talking about at Moody....

I'D SAY IT WAS MOODY AB OR THE 74TH WHEN IT GOT TO POPE AFB AND THEN WENT TO F-16'S.

We had A-10s at moody for around 6 years...I got there in 95 & we had a few, I'm thinking it was 2000 or 2001 when they left....I sure do miss going down to Valdosta & see my old girls...oh well...we had one on the ramp here at Robins today from "BC" two travel pods & an external tank...haven't made my way over there though TA gets a little touchy...bad thing is, I bet I know more about the old girl than they do...changes & all...lol...

Activated 1992 Deactivated 1993. It was a tenant unit from the 355th FW.

I was thinking McCord myself, just wanted to see if there had been another unit out there with a shorter life span.

Goose, the 74th came to Pope in F-16's, then transitioned to A-10's later.

I actually posted a question on this a few weeks ago in the A-10 modelling forum, since I'd like to build a McChord 354th/355th A-10, but need information on unit markings and their load-outs for training/exercises, etc.

Seems like I remember you mentioning that the AF never really decided to put the Hogs in McCord but it was more a holding pen for them until they could get them in Georgia. Am I remembering that correct?

Hitler, I'm not sure about them going to McChord until they could put them in Ga, cause we had all the "flyable storage" jets at Shaw that went to Moody (I think these came for Grissom). I'm sure Dice will set us straight.

From what I was told is the Hogs were supposed to go to Moody in 91-92 sometime when the beach closed, however Hurricane Andrew ripped Homestead to pieces, the lawn darts had to be moved to Moody, taking the 70th's place for a bit.

COACH,

I LEFT A COUPLE OF MONTHS BEFORE THE CHANGE TO POPE,I WAS ALWAYS UNDER THE IMPRESSION THEY WENT AS HOGS THEN WENT TO F-16'S WHEN THEY GOT THERE.
BECAUSE THEY DID TAKE 74TH TROOPS FROM EAFB AND STUCK'EM ON LAWNDARTS WHEN THEY SHOWED UP,PLUS TROOPS WENT TO POPE WITH THE HOGS AND THEIR FAMILES IN SOME CASES HAD TO MOVE WITHOUT THE MEMBER.
I MISSED THAT TRIP,ONE OF OUR C-141'S HELPED WITH THE MOVE AND I WAS STUCK RUNNING 3RD SHIFT AT TRAVIS.

ANOTHER TIDBIT ALOT OF THOSE HOG DAWGS THAT WERE AT EAFB THAT DIDNT GO TO POPE WERE SENT TO ALOT OF THE WEST COAST BASES AS KC-10 TROOPS.
MY AFSC WAS HEAVIES SO I WAS SENT EARLY TO TRASH HAULERS,ALMOST GOT STUCK ON "FRED" BUT I KNEW THE CO OF THE 602 OMS FROM MY T-39 DAYS AT SCOTT AFB AND HE PICKED ME UP.

Muggs,

I remember the jets in flyable storage, but we didn't send all of them to Moody did we? I can remember going out to DM on the transfer team and picking up several aircraft from out there. But, I also know we has a 28 PAA as opposed to the typical 24 so that could have been the reason for that.

DICE, any input on this??????

Did you guys work A-10 storage at Shaw? I remember Bobby Starr and Tom Nichols working there. Dave White was the MSgt in charge. I worked there in weapons. I say worked in a very loose fashion. That was some of the most skate duty I ever had. There was also some guy named John that had a freak boating accident. Hit a log and the engine was torn from his boat, flipped through the air and landed in the passenger seat still running. Luckily for Bobby Starr his wife refused his kitchen pass that day or he would have been in that seat. I also remember Steve Barthlow coming up from Moody to inspect the jets they would get.

I don't have time to get into it this morning but the whole "Hawg shuffle" from 1992-1998 was driven by BRAC closing a lot of A-10 units (because they thought they were going to the boneyard) and the post DS decission to keep the A-10 in the inventory. The AF put them were they could until they could develop a "new" fielding plan.

I didn't work the storage jets, but I was in Spec flight at that time. I think we sent Joe Neff and Denise Terrill down to work them. Not sure on those names, but that's what comes to mind.

Sure does. Also kinda quashes the rumors that've been going around forever about the 23rd leaving Pope. IMHO, those jets aren't going anywhere till Ft. Bragg closes, in other words, not for a loooooooong time.

Now there's some name's I haven't heard in some time boy does it bring back some memories. Can't say that I officaly worked down there but I did make a few trips down after hours to liberate some mission essential parts. If only I had known then that I would end up working those same birds down at Moody I think I might have left them alone (LOL).

So Hitler was you in Specs or APG? Do you remember JD Prater or MSgt Dijon (DJ)? Hey Mugs I see one of your old flight chiefs occasionally, remember Cimo? How about Max Evans, he was a SMSgt? I was APG and worked for both DJ (expiditor) and JD (flight chief). Last I heared JD was still around the Shaw area but I havn't seen him in years. As for Fain he was at Pope but I'm not sure if he's still there. Also I'm not sure if you remember Larry Carpenter (Slow V-10 days), Ron Dobbins, Rick Barh and a whole slew of others that I can't remember off the top of my head, but they were all stationed up there, or at least when I left in 2003.

How about the shortest time AFRES unit, would that be Grissom?

Or the shortest ANG unit.....not sure, but am thinking Wisconsin.
