I'm writing a term paper for a Masters class on aircraft maintenance management. I'm interested in writing on how we deal with gun barrels that have been overheated due to excessive fire rates. I know how it works from the stick actuator's side, but not the MX side. Any help would be appreciated. Mainly looking for how MX cycles and inspections change when a gun is overused and what MX procedures occur after it's reported/discovered. I know the barrels are demilled and decommissioned a lot sooner than normal, just need facts and numbers to go with it. I can give you dudes my real e-mail off-line if it's not discussable here...

Warthog30 it has been a long time since I worked on the GAU-8/A but here goes the way we did it in the early days. Back then the barrels had constant twist to the rifling. Barrels where replaced at the 25K inspection , best I remember. We also had a "lead the force" gun at RAF Bentwaters. This aircraft was to fire on every mission. They fired the crap out of that gun. You see maintenance schedules were still fluid then. Procedures were changing on a regular basis. Anyway later on came the continous gain barrels. Instead of the rifling remaining constant, like your average gun barrel these barrels had a continous increase in the rate of twist starting at the breach end and increasing to the muzzle end. These barrels had a life much longer than the originals. I cant really remember but I believe 60K or there abouts.
When a gun was suspected of having bad barrels, IE bad despersion, we would bore scope them. The TO had photos of all kinds of damage to the lands. We would evaluate the allowable wear, damage and determine if the barrels needed to be replaced or not. Sometimes only one barrel would be replaced. We used to could replace up to three without changing the whole set.
As far as overused I am not sure what you mean. I never had a pilot come back and say I overused the gun. I had plenty come back and say the dispersion was unacceptable. Even had one at Bentwaters that had a round fall short and hit a FAC vehicle, no injuries.
MD cycles were determined by two factors in those days. 18 Months intervals and K (rounds fired) intervals.

Strat,
Thanks for the info, that really helps. By "overused" I mean we had limitations on how much we were to use the gun. For instance, we were to fire 200 round combat bursts with a minimum 2 minute rest between passes. If we overdid it we were supposed to report it and that changed the inspection schedule on the gun barrels, but I can't remember the details.

Thanks again for the help....

Warthog, you're talking about the combat schedule...more than 100 rounds fired within a two minute period. If a gun is on the combat schedule it effects inspections and barrel life. A constant twist barrel has significantly shorter barrel life than gain twist barrels do when on the combat schedule.

The gun shop guys have the T.O. where this is all spelled out in detail.

FYI, there is no limit on length of burst or number of rounds that can be fired in one sortie. There is also no requirement to "rest" between bursts. Let 'er rip!

Changing barrels is relatively simple and is done on the flightline, by the weapons troops I think. I remember Thunder AMU changed seven sets in one night while TDY from Nellis when we first discovered this combat schedule/increased dispersion problem in Fall of 1996. The bullets were going everywhere and we kept hitting the wings with the bullet tips that kept coming off ddue to thee wobbly spin from worn barrels. Even broke a windsscreen on one sortie.

I was at BTW when we shot that FAC Blazer...Grafenwohr range 302, it got everyone's attention! That pilot is at D-M now.

DAmn Thats Some parabola there. Amazing the amount of Radial Stress on the bullets forcing the sections apart like that!

That was intelligent and useful Mudd.

But it certainly is what Ive come to expect.
