Most of you know the story Kim "KC" Campbell and her landing in Man Rev after taking damage over Baghdad but, how many of you know what happen to the jet that brought her home? Before posting it on my site I would like yall's feedback on my story...

Cool Story Dice,
I wasn't sure if the whole story would ever make it out into the main stream. I'm curious as to why the CANNed parts did not have supply documents against them for replacement. You would think there would be some extra LRU's within the supply system, unless the parts were XB3 (throw away) or they were never officially requisitioned. The funds for the repair of the battle damage make sense to me, but purchasing the CANNed parts do not. I guess I never understood the pretend money in the USAF supply system! I'm sure some ANG unit from Al Jaber has a few "shop moc up" parts from that TDY! Was the estimated cost $3 million or $3 billion?

Kungfu, thanks it was 3 Million, I made the chance. As far as the parts (LRUs) we have no paperwok on them so each would have to be treated as coming from a battle damaged aircraft, which meant total tear-down and inspection. The cost of a new one was almost cheep as doing that.

Roger Hilter, I figured someone here would have more info on the Jabber side, I just know what happen from my end.

Dice-man. Great story! I didn't know the political side of 81-987's demise but I was there and watched KC land. It was a georgeous landing I might add. My crew recovered the aircraft from the runway. What I understood was that the ABDR Crew from depot decided they couldn't repair the aft fuselage because of the damage to the structure. They discovered this after they had removed the verticle and horizontal stabs and some skin. It was decided to crate her up and then the K-ball frenzy began. The guys from Pope, who were at that time, forward deployed to Iraq, came down to Jaber and took everything they could get.

Lets see how did the parts get to 258 so fast. I can answer that. We had already removed the parts so we could remove the eng, and just finished the battle damage rapair on the aft cowl and outer door, when the emali came down saying get the part up range. we packed up the parts that day. they were on a 130 that night. later on about mid to late may we got the word to box up the jet and gut it for parts for the acft that were still able to fly. That day we and a few others raped and pillaged 987. I still think if we would have had the back shop support(already sent up rang) and about another month we could have had it in the air.

I believe we witnessed this from the same angle. The nacelle door did not come from 987 though. I personally removed it from a nacelle assembly in Popes MRSP and put it on a pallet going north. 258 only needed an engine and a nacelle door. I think you'd agree it could be back in the war before 987. I still hated to see any Hog put into crates!

GREAT STORY DICE,

I GUESS THE DAYS OF "GET THEM BACK IN THE AIR NO MATTER WHAT" ARE GONE.
BUT I DONT REMEMBER THEM EVER DOING TEAR DOWN INSPECTIONS ON BD A-10'S TO GET 80-0186 BACK INTO THE AIR,THEY TOOK PARTS FROM THE
NEW ORLEANS JET THAT WAS SHOT UP,THE BEACH JET AND I CANT REMEMBER IF 79-9197 AND 79-9181 WERE OUT OF THE GAME YET EITHER,BUT PARTS CAME FROM EVERYWHERE.
I KNOW THEY HAD TO PATCH UP THE COWL DOORS AND THE LEFT VERT STAB THEY TOOK FROM THE "NO" JET.

OH WELL ALMOST 11 YRS BETWEEN WARS.

I was around then too. It still works that way. You just have to know a way too fool the computers these days. Sometimes you have to get reall creative.

Cool story Dice, I was north of Jaber when the BC jet was repaired. We helped the Hill boys and actually finished up the job by hanging the outer nacelle door. I got to preflight it for the flight back south. By the way, thanks for the 30th Ann. coin.

Glad you guys liked the story, I knew it would bring-out some details from the Kuwait side that I never knew about. I have some pictures of her arriving in NY I will post tomorrow.
