So I'm transferring my Avi files to a SVCD format and all of the sudden my compy freezes. All of the sudden, my local C-Drive has gone down to 1.5 Gigs remaining, and I have never put on new files; basically, 13 Gigs of mine had vanished.

I ran the disk compressor function on two of the accounts and only got back 1 more Gig.

I finally ran Ad-Aware and checked my hard drive and wound up gaining 16 gigs: 2 more than I originally had.

Does anyone know what happened?
Can spyware actually eat up all your drive space like that!??

One of my students lost his entire hard-drive to SpyWare.

Yeah. Spyware can take over a hard drive quicker than an Oprah watching housewife can go through a box of ho ho's, or the guests on Jerry Springer can get into a fight

I've just checked with one of our desktop security bods and he would be suprised if spyware alone was responsible for 16gb of missing space in a short period of time.

What O/S are you running?
Have you any idea how long you had been missing the space for.

He did offer a suggestion as to how you ended up with more HDD space than you thought you had.

Spyware is very good at hiding in the NTFS Streams Space (where Windows normally hides it hidden files like Windows recovery Metadata). If you had 2gb of spyware hidden there, your system would alway have reported the space not as used but never having existed, but when you cleaned out the spyware the space would come back.

New Technology File System...

It replaced FAT32 as the way PCs store data and then find it again on their HDD's

Not a bad little OS.

My bag used to be Solaris 2.8 running on BIG Sun clusters.

They were sweet.

We used to have Sun visulisation servers for real time 3D modling of oil rigs and airportc terminals that were running with 64GB video ram.

Every compared Air lines to Operating systems..?


UNIX Airways

Everyone brings one piece of the plane along when they come
to the airport. They all go out on the runway and put the
plane together piece by piece, arguing non-stop about what
kind of plane they are supposed to be building.

Air DOS

Everybody pushes the airplane until it glides, then they jump
on and let the plane coast until it hits the ground again.
Then they push again, jump on again, and so on ...

Mac Airlines

All the stewards, captains, baggage handlers, and ticket agents
look and act exactly the same. Every time you ask questions
about details, you are gently but firmly told that you don't
need to know, don't want to know, and everything will be done
for you without your ever having to know, so just shut up.

Windows Air

The terminal is pretty and colorful, with friendly stewards,
easy baggage check and boarding, and a smooth take-off. After
about 10 minutes in the air, the plane explodes with no warning
whatsoever.

Windows NT Air

Just like Windows Air, but costs more, uses much bigger planes,
and takes out all the other aircraft within a 40-mile radius
when it explodes.

Linux Air

Disgruntled employees of all the other OS airlines decide to
start their own airline. They build the planes, ticket counters,
and pave the runways themselves. They charge a small fee to
cover the cost of printing the ticket, but you can also download
and print the ticket yourself. When you board the plane, you
are given a seat, four bolts, a wrench and a copy of the
seat-HOWTO.html. Once settled, the fully adjustable seat is
very comfortable, the plan leaves and arrives on time without
a single problem, the in-flight meal is wonderful. You try to
tell customers of the other airlines about the great trip, but
all they can say is, "You had to do what with the seat?"

I was running XP.
I don't know what it was, but it's running better than before after I de-fragged it.

And I didn't lose 2 gigs, I lost 13!!

I really have no enormous problems with XP; it's Microsoft's best attempt of trying to operate like an Apple. I'm also thinking of partitioning with Linux.

What problems do you guys encounter???

44, I've found a couple others:

<i>BeOS Air-

You have to pay for the tickets, but they're half the price of Windows Air, and if you are an aircraft mechanic you can probably ride for free. It only takes 15 minutes to get to the airport and you are cheuferred there in a limozine. BeOS Air only has limited types of planes that only only hold new luggage. All planes are single seaters and the model names all start with an "F" (F-14, F-15, F-16, F-18, etc.). The plane will fly you to your destination on autopilot in half the time of other Airways or you can fly the plane yourself. There are limited destinations, but they are only places you'd want to go to anyway. You tell all your friends how great BeOS Air is and all they say is "What do you mean I can't bring all my old baggage with me?"

OS/2 Airlines-
The terminal is almost empty, with only a few prospective passengers milling about. The announcer says that their flight has just departed, wishes them a good flight, though there are no planes on the runway. Airline personnel walk around, apologising profusely to customers in hushed voices, pointing from time to time to the sleek, powerful jets outside the terminal on the field. They tell each passenger how good the real flight will be on these new jets and how much safer it will be than Windows Airlines, but that they will have to wait a little longer for the technicians to finish the flight systems.
Once they finally finished you're offered a flight at reduced cost. To board the plane, you have your ticket stamped ten different times by standing in ten different lines. Then you fill our a form showing where you want to sit and whether the plane should look and feel like an ocean liner, a passenger train or a bus. If you succeed in getting on the plane and the plane succeeds in taking off the ground, you have a wonderful trip...except for the time when the rudder and flaps get frozen in position, in which case you will just have time to say your prayers and get in crash position.

ouch lol

The only improvement I've noticed with XP Pro SP2 over ME is that it shuts down more reliably ( and much more slowly ) than ME.
I dont get the "blue screen of death" with XP but it still locks up and freaks out so what's the differance.

None, I was just jumping on the macho BS bandwagon. I'm guessing Snipes got it in for XP because it represents the establishment and he's such a little rebel <img src=icon_smile_wink.gif border=0 align=middle>.

Seriously, we've rolled XP SP2 out onto over 7,000 desktops in the UK and will be doing the rest of the world in the next year or two and it's proven to be a pretty good desktop OS.

It's definately the best MS has ever had, but that not much of a challange is it...

Large corporates are proabably happier with XP than home users. Let's put it this way, all the major suppliers can't do enough to keep us big companies happy so we say we want this type of standard desktop to say Dell and they will make damn sure the OS is stable on it.

Big corporates also have all the other stuff like proper firewalls, good system wide AV, email filtering etc that stops the shit getting through that can frag the systems.

We also use AD to enforce some pretty stiff restirctions on what the muppets, sorry users can do to try and break things.

So all and all we're pretty happy with XP.

I'm going to have to have a bath and scrub myself clean after sticking my tounge so far up Bill's ass.
